MERRY CHRISTMAS MAX!
Max had never had a Christmas before. Not a real one anyway. The foster family she had lived with after escaping from Manticore didn't have too much money for things like Christmas. In fact very few people in this world still had money and compasion for Christmas. People in this day and age just forgot about it.
Sometimes she wondered if she had missed out on something. She'd seen books and things about Christams before the pulse. Of course Manticore had never taught them such things. Why was she thinking about it now?
Because its December 24th. Christmas Eve. She saw families huddled together for warmth. Couples walked hand in hand. True, people may not have money for Christmas, but they had each other. Max had no one.
Well, maybe that wasn't entirely true. She had Herbal, Kendrea, Sketchy, and Original Cindy. But they didn't really know her. Even around them she had to keep up a front, not letting them know her dark side. They had no idea what she had been through. No one did.
Except him. Logan, he knew. But for some reason, Max didn't like that idea. Every time she saw Logan, she felt weak. true she definetly had an attitude problem around him, but that was just to hide her true feelings. Logan made her weak and that was not exceptiable. Max could not be weak.
Then why does she want to be with him now? Why is it all she wants to do is be near him today? For some reason, she knew that's where she wanted to be. So for three hours she'd been sitting on the Space Needle, fighting the urge to go to Logan's apartment. Normally when she came up here, she could clear her thoughts, but today, nothing seemed to help her.
Finally she realised there would be only one way to clear her head. Maybe it wasn't smart, but it's what she wanted. She needed to see Logan. Just for a few minutes.
So she got on her motorcycle and headed to the the remains of the upper-class area where Logan lived. The whole way there, her head was full of reasons why she shouldn't do this, but she ignored them, not a smart move but she did it anyway.
She reached Logan's apartment and hurried up to his penthouse. She decided to use the elevator since she might look suspicious jumping/climbing the side of a building in the middle of the day none the less.
She entered his apartment without knocking and at first she thought no one was home. Then she smelled something delicious coming from the kitchen. She walked into the room and noticed most of the lights were off with the exception of a small candle on the table. She headed over to the table and then she saw Logan's sleeping form on the couch.
She moved closer to him. Gods, he was the most beautiful sight she'd ever seen. He'd removed his glasses and his hair was slightly dishelved. He looked like a little boy who stayed up too late. Max reached for the blanket on his legs and pulled it up more to keep it from falling. Then she went over to check on whatever Logan had in the oven. Then she saw a note taped to the table.
Logan,
Sorry I couldn't have dinner with you, but I have to go home and have Christams with my family. I'll be back in a few days. Don't do anythign stupid while I'm away.
~Bling
Logan was alone on Christmas, like her. Next to the note she small a small gold necklas with a diamond pendant on it. It was beautiful, but she didn't think it was from Bling. Maybe Logan had a girlfriend now. For some reason, Max didn't like that idea at all.
Max turned her attention back to the smell coming from the oven. It was a large bird of some kind, a turkey most likely. Then she noticied some other food around the table. A Christmas dinner. The table was set for two but there was enough food for twenty. She wondered why Logan ahdn't invited her. Maybe he didn't think o her like that.
Then she heard a sound from the couch and watched as Logan slowly got himself up. He looked around and at first he didn't see Max, but then he looked again.
"Hey there sleepy- head. Good thing I came along or all your food would of burned." said Max.
"What are you doing here?" asked Logan
"I was in the area and you haven't paged me in awhile, I just thoguht I'd make sure you hadn't decide to flee the country."
Logan smiled, "No, just been, busy"
"I can see, so when was I gonna get my invite? Or where you gonna keep me from all this free food?"
"I was going to page you right before it was done, make it a surprise. But know that your here, dinner?" he joked.
"Well, I had plans, with this really hot guy, but, what the hey."
"Liar." laughed Logan.
"Lets' eat okay? Argue later."
Logan moved himself into his wheelchair and then rolled over to Max's side.
"How long are planning on staying?" he joked.
"Just long enough to drive you crazy."
Max carried the bird over to the table, then sat down to in the chair across from where Logans had parked his wheelchair.
"Man, you have enough food here for twenty people."
"Well, I figured between you and Bling, at least half the thing would disappear."
"So Bling went to see his family?" asked Max.
"Yeah, told me to save him some leftovers though, his mom doesn't cook that well."explained Logan.
The two ate there meal with only a little chit-chat. Finally they finished and headed over to the living room. Max sat on the couch before she said anything.
"Hey, Logan I wanted to ask, I know you and Bling have agreat relationship, but I didn't think you were into giving each other expensive jewelry."
"you mean the necklas? Just a memento." said Logan
"Your ex-wife?"
"No," Logan said, "my mom, my family. They died on the Christmas before the Pulse hit. Christmas was always a big thing in my family. We would have Christmas dinner, then exchange a gift or two. We'd do all sorts of things like Christams caraols, or work at one of the homeless shelters. My family always wanted to give back to the community."
He almost looked like he was going to cry. Then he continued.
"That Christmas, my family had just finished dinner. My Dad gave my mom that necklas. She'd just opened it when my sister started screaming fromt he other room. She was only five and had been napping in her room. Dad went to go check then came back yelling there was a fire and he couldn't get to my sister. My mom gathered me and my brother up and told us to hurry downstairs away while they went to get my sister. I don't know why, but I picked up the necklas. My brother and I started to go downstairs, but that part of the ouse was already on fire. My brother tripped and one of the rafters in the roof fell on him. I tried to help him. I couldn't so I ran out of the house to get help. They took me away and told me later that everyone had died. They said it was arson, but no one knows who did it."
Max listened silently to the whole story, then she noticed the tears running down his face. For some reason, she went to him and just held him while he cried. Then they were both silent, just sitting there. Max felt Logan's arms around her. She didn't know who moved, her or him, but before she knew it, they were kissing. Not a gentle, friendly kiss, but one of passion that had been pent up for years, on both sides. Minutes felt like hours.
They parted for oxygen, Max could have gone longer, but she knew he couldn't. Eyes met for a moment, and words that neither had spoken seemed to be clear. Max pulled herself up into Logan's lap, arms around his neck.
Logan reached over to the table and picked up the necklas. He reached in front of Max and place it around her neck, then moved her hair so he could put on the clasp.
"Logan, this was your mother's. It's all you have of you family." Max said.
"Your my family know, you and Bling, but I thing this will look better on you. Maybe I'll get Bling a neck tie."
Max held Logan's face in her hands and kissed him again, then she whispered.
"Merry Christmas Logan."
"Merry Christmas Max"
Max finally celebrated Christmas. She had what mattered most, family. She wan't alone anymore.
