| This is "Pure Enchantment" or Chant for short. He is my gorgeous male Pied Cokatiel. I bought Chant in September of 99' as a parent raised bird and was told he was about 7 months old. There were about 4 or 5 cages of birds who looked just like him and I saw him near the back with his bright black eyes and decided he was the one to bring home. For the first few months he was very shy and didn't like much attention but after a little while he started to trust me and is now the most affectionate bird ever. He loves his head being stratched and sitting on my shoulder just nestling agaisnt me. He comes when called and loves to imitate my whistles. I couldn't ask for a better bird. A test of Chant's loyalty was proven one summer day about a year ago. I had him outside in my backyard and we were both sitting on the grass in the sunshine. I always keep his wings properly clipped but I soon realized that it isn't always enough. Anyways something must have startled him because he took off into a tree. He wasn't very high up and so I went to go grab him but he was so scared of being somewhere where he wasn't sure of he flew higher up and higher until he started going from tree to tree. I was so certain that I was going to lose him. I hear of so many stories of people loosing thier birds, even a friend of mine has lost a cockatiel like that. His final stop was a very large tree about 60 feet high just behinde my backyard. He looked like a little white dot. I tried for hours to coaxed him down but he was too afraid, or didn't know how. It even started to rain and get cold so I began to really worry. I returned to my backyard calling his name and shaking his favorite toy, a colorful bell. All of a sudden he started to fly closer and closer. He was slowly coming back. He even had some company for a while because a pigeon joined him on his branch. For a few hours I kept watching both birds. Suddenly the pigeon flew away in a hurry as if something had scared it. Chant, not really knowing anything about the outdoors did not notice the large group of ravens approaching him, the pigeon did. I began to panic because I knew the ravens would try and make a meal of him. I started yelling Chants name. I could hear him whistling back at me but then one of the ravens swooped at him and he took off over my house. I ran to the other side chasing the group of birds down the street yelling and waving my hands. Then one of the ravens grabbed Chant and through him to the ground. They all rushed to go attack him but I just got there in time and grabbed Chant. Thankfully he wasn't hurt, just a bit shocked. Now I never let him outside unless he's in a cage or I have my hand over him. I was so happy and relieved to have him back and have I ever learned my lesson.Today Chant is just over 4 years old and going strong. I hope my wonderful boy is with me for many more years to come :) |
