Prologue

Kagome’s shoes thudded crisply against the storm-gray sidewalk, her hands fingering the worn straps of a brown leather bag.  Her eyes jumped along the sides of the street, drinking in the unfamiliar lines of shops and restaurants.  The day was perfect, blanketed in a nearly seamless blue sky with a skittish autumn breeze sweeping through the city.

Her chin lifted to the fluffy clouds stitched into the wide expanse of periwinkle-blue.  Transferred, she mused thoughtfully.  Why was it, again…?  Sighing, she averted her eyes to the bow-tied laces of her shoes.  Kouga…

He dogged my steps, unnerving me more and more as the seconds raced.  Leave me alone, I thought irritably.  Why was he following me today?  I rounded the corner, hugging my books to my chest.  Math, English, history…  What was the homework tonight?  Study ahead…

“Kagome.”  His voice pleaded with me, and I slowed, turning around to face him.  My eyes quickly scanned the area for people.  There were some huddled near a window close by.

I smiled.  “Kouga-kun, do you need something?”  He looked somewhat upset…

“I saw you with Nobunaga yesterday.”

He had a sharp mouth, I realized offhandedly.  The way it was shaped—he looked cunning, quick to judge.  “Yes, what about it?” I offered sweetly.

“Did he touch you?” he demanded.

I turned a suspicious glance on him.  “What do you mean?”

“I mean, did he touch you?”  Kouga looked anxious now.  Tense and upset.

“Not in the way I think you mean…I guess…”

“You guess?”

“Yes, I guess…”  I didn’t like the way this conversation was going.  What was he driving at?

“Kagome, I’m serious here.”  He looked intense, his flat blue eyes fixed on me.  “You’re mine.  If that bastard touched you…”  The threat was left hanging.  If he touched me…?

“Kouga, we were doing a project,” I provided bluntly.  “And I’m not yours, or anyone else’s.”

I was suddenly flattened out against the wall, my books the only thing separating mine and Kouga’s bodies.  His fist was planted next to one ear, Kouga leaning in and breathing heavily near the other.  I tried not to panic.

“You’re mine, Kagome.  Don’t argue.”  His normally low voice was pitched slightly higher, desperate.

“Kouga, I think you should calm down,” I said weakly, squirming.

“Don’t,” he snapped.  The heavy breathing stopped, and he moved back.  I relaxed slightly, glad for the space, then pushed back against the wall once more.  WHY can’t you accept this?  You’re mine, Kagome.  MINE and no one else’s.  No one will ever touch you except me.  ME.

I looked into his eyes fearfully.  They were clear and unfocused at the same time.  They were shining, and yet, he looked somewhat at a loss.  Gathering my wits as best I could, I dropped my books onto his feet.

I only succeeded in a one-and-a-half-second distraction.  Kouga cursed and glanced down at his injured limb only once.

He glared at me, moving so his forearms rested on either side of my head.  He leaned in.  “Kagome, don’t do this to me…”

I could see it now, his eyes were shining and fogging over at the same time.  Help!  Help!  It was fast.  I opened my mouth to scream and, with his hellishly fast reflexes, took the opportunity to close his mouth over mine.

I struggled vainly.  His body only pressed closer against mine, and I felt sick.  Let me go…let me go…  My hands, still free, pushed against his stomach.  His hips grated against me.  I focused on the tears, hot and heavy, streaming from my eyes.  Stop, Kouga, stop…  I gathered myself.  Calm, calm.  Don’t panic…

I stilled.  His lips wandered away from mine, and I took the chance to scream, pushing him away and kicking him at the same time.

He didn’t stumble far, and I didn’t get the chance to move.  Before he came back snarling, though, he was down on the floor, unconscious.  In his place stood a tall girl, auburn eyes flashing.

I slid down the wall, smiling shakily.  “Kagura…?”

She nodded curtly, folding her outstretched arm across her chest.  “I take self-defense classes.”  She was thin, I noted.  Thin, but strong.

We had never gotten along well, maybe not gotten along at all.  The only times I’d seen her were in the hall during breaks.  Her character was categorized as ‘bitch’ by many; it wasn’t hard to understand why.  Then again, I figured I liked her the way she was; she didn’t pretend to be anything she wasn’t, and if she had something to say, then she would unabashedly say it outright.  Running a hand through my hair, I smiled again.  “Thank you.”

She spared Kouga’s fallen body a contemptuous glance.  “He deserved it.”

I nodded, silently agreeing with her.

“Are you alright?”

I nodded again, not quite sure what to say.  I was almost sexually assaulted…what could I say?

People were nice enough to steer clear from Kagome as she daydreamed.  When she got her bearings again, she was standing before the school, staring beyond the bars of towering extravagant gates.  She smiled at the small gardens squared off from the disciplined concrete.  Off on either side of the entrance, cherry trees waved at her, blowing spiraling pink flowers in her direction.

A few groups loitered around the building’s walls, each wearing the silver button of the school.  Some spared her a sideward glance, but most of them ignored her.  She sighed.  I hope I can do well here…it’s a shame I had to start in the middle of 10th grade… Lifting her chin, she stalked into the school, determination set clearly in her eyes.
