Those who are Healers begin as just that, Healers. There are higher ranks in the Healers system however.
There are always two High Priests and two High Priestesses who are the top rank. They are elected by other Priests and Priestesses of their Temple, and will serve for ten years. The High Priests are called "Solstices" and the High Priestesses are called "Equinoxes". They are very rarely seen as they only leave the Temple to perform High Rituals on High Holy Days. They remain seated as their position for the ten year term unless they are unseated for commiting a capitol offense against their beliefs. They also have the duty to condemn other Priests and those of lower ranking for violation of Temple Law. They further have the power to order assassinations and/or intelligence work of the Warrior Priests for the interest of the Temple or their Kingdom. They wear long silk robes embroidered with gold on the skirts and sleeves with a large "all seeing" eye on both the front and back of their robe. The last thing to note about the High Priests/Priestesses is that they are never armed.
Temple Priests are next under the High Priests. Dedicated to serving the gods, they never leave the Temple. They do propitiations for the the populace on a daily basis and do divining work of day to day matters. They handle the right of passage of the populace. It is is their duty to clean and maintain the altars (housekeepers clean the Temple) and replensih stocks of incence... etc. They make offerings to the gods. They also teach the Healers and Initiates and know the history of the Kingdom..keeping the records of events. They can control the weather, intervene with the gods, heal, write, do astronomy, astrology, and math. They wear purple robes embroidered with the "all seeing" eye on their chests in silver. They carry no weapons. If they wear jewelry, they are allowed to wear amethysts set in silver.
Next are Warrior Priests who are not often found in the Temple. They tend to be with the armies, at the castle, or roaming at will. They perform all the standard duties of the priesthood and many others besides. During battle, they are most often found in the front lines. Those who fight with blades are often found riding a whie, grey, black, white and colored (like a paint), or palimino horse so that they are extemely conspicuous; thus letting the troops know that their gods fight with them.
Those who use the bow and arrows are usually with the ambushers and ride bays or chestnuts or paints for camoflague. Sometimes the archers are in the battle riding in chariots drawn by light colored (conspicuous) horses.
Warrior Priests perform victory rituals before battle and thanksgiving rituals after. They bless weapons and warriors. They are very well versed in both the spiritual and the martial arts. Their dark side is that they can be used by the High Priests as assassins if needed.
Archers: wear brown buckskin breeches and green linen, hip-length tunics. The "all seeing" eye is embroidered in a small logo over their hearts in brown to help in camo. If they wear jewlery at all, it is jet set in silver. As well as their archery equip - they often have a stilleto strapped to their strong side thigh.
Swordsmen: usually carry at least three blades - broadsword on their backs, stilleto on their strong side thigh and a small, flat blade strapped to their inner wrist or worn disguised as a belt buckle. They wear white buckskin leggings and a red, hip-length tunic. These are not warriors that do not want to be seen. It is their job to be seen. Thier tunics are embroidered wtih the "all seeing" eye in gold upon their chests. If they wear jewelry it will be gold, set with rubies, garnets or jet.
Lastly are the Healers. They are Initiates that decided that Healing is their vocation, not priesthood and so stopped their education at the level of Healer. Healers are everywhere in Dark Gully. They are herbalists, who can also use all of the elements to heal. They can also use sound, light, and touch to heal. Some of them are so skilled that they seem to perform miracles. Healers cannot, however raise the dead. They are mostly found at "hospitals" that are like monastaries, but they also travel with armies and are able to roam at will.
They ride mules as horses are warrior mounts. Mules are more calm and peaceful and represent the aura of the Healer. Healers cannot manifest from the ether as they never learned that skill. They are never fighters, but they can defend themselves though Warrior Priests defend the hospitals when needed.
Healers wear green trousers and lavender/pink tunics as these are the primary healing colors. If they wear jewelry they wear silver set with crystals and other healing stones.
Note: When first created characters that are Healers will begin as Initiates. As they progress in levels they will move up the Priesthood and have a choice on what role to take.
Note: Healers must begin with a Wisdom score of 20, as well as a Physical and Mental Resistance of 15 or higher.
Note: Until they reach the point of choosing to be a Warrior Priest, initiates can only Heal as a special ability. The ability succeeds automatically and heals 10 Health Points. They may perform this ability up to 5 times per day per level of experience. (Example: A level 3 priest could heal 15 times per day.)
Note: The choice to become a Warrior Priest is gained at level 7 (though the Initiate may choose to stay a Healer). The choice to be a Temple priest is gained at 11 (though the healer can choose to remain an Initiate or Warrior Priest). When a Healer reaches level 18, and if a spot is available, they may be elected to be a High Priest/Priestess.
Note on Warrior Priests: Swordsmen and Archers go by the Warrior Hit/Dodge table. Warrior Priests can do d4 damage in hand-to-hand combat. Swordsmen gain a +2 damage to sword attacks and may use two swords in one attack round (one in each hand) beginning at level 9. Archers gain +2 damage to missile attacks and have a firing rate with a bow/crossbow of 2 shots per round beginning at level 9.
Note: The Initiates are a roleplaying profession firstly. Do not choose this profession and then complain about how weak it is. Its purpose is to be just what the name implies...a healer.
