Once upon a time in a land very similar to this one, winged canine-like creatures with magnificent wings and spines walked, swam, and flew the earth. However, these Icidrakes where not the ones we have befriended today. They came in two colors, black and white. They all looked almost exactly the same, and could only tell each other apart by sent.

One fine spring morning, a little black Icidrake pup named Kei romped and played with her three brothers. They danced puppy dances in the morning sun, and her three brothers soon began to play hide and seek, Kei’s most hated game. Instead of hiding, the little pup disobeyed her mother and left her brothers to wander alone, as she had often done before. Kei walked and walked, soon she came to a field of beautiful, colorful flowers. The pup smiled at the sight. “I wish I had colors like that. Black and white is so boring.” She said wistfully. The little pup then had an idea. Maybe she too could have colors! And then everyone would say what a pretty and special pup she was. She would finally be different! Kei took a running leap, and rolled as hard and as fast as she could. Soon she stood up, muddy and grass-stained, but not like the flowers.

Then, a beautiful butterfly the colors of a setting sun fluttered around the Icidrake’s head. In a small but understandable voice, the butterfly squeaked in outrage. “You silly pup! You ruined the flowers and my breakfast. I should tell your mother!”

Kei turned and gasped at the destruction she had done, and felt her lip began to quiver. “I.I just wanted to be beautiful, like you!” She cried, big fat tears rolling down her cheeks and dripping off her nose. The butterfly sighed, feeling sorry for the pup. “Calm down, I can tell you how to get color.” The insect said, perching on Kei’s nose. Kei’s eye widened. “Really? Where!” She asked eagerly.

“Well,” The butterfly said. “First you must find a rainbow. Then follow it until you find it’s end. There, climb all the way to the top of rainbow, and roll down. It is dangerous, rainbows are very unsubstantial.” The butterfly warned, stroking its antenna. Kei smiled and danced. “Oh thank you! I will always remember this!” She called, and then eagerly bounded off in search of a rainbow.

Now, back at the den, Kei’s mother looked out the window to see Kei’s three brothers come running up the path. “Kei ran off mama! It’s not our fault.” They cried. Kei’s mother became very worried, and called the pack together. Soon it would be dark, and the whole clan went out following the pup’s trail to bring her home nice and safe.

Kei had been searching for hours, and had yet to find any rainbow. Her paws hurt and her legs ached; yet she kept walking. Soon, Kei came to a strange place she had never seen before. Her heart began to thump excitedly, as above her the rainbow arched high into the clouds. The little pup ran as fast as he little legs could take her, she ran and ran from what seemed like miles, and the rainbow seemed, only farther and farther away. But Kei did not give up, and soon she found herself at the base of the rainbow.

By then, the searchers had found the little pup and Kei’s mother let out a shout. “Kei!” But it was to late. The little pup put one foot, and then the other on the rainbow. She sank up to her ankles in thick goopy colorful liquid, but it held, and she climbed. All the other Icidrakes gathered below, calling to Kei to come down, but Kei kept going, She soon reached the top, and with a grin, jumped and rolled back down. Kei’s mother noticed the rainbow was starting to fade, with her daughter on it! All the Icidrakes gathered closer to catch the pup. But, as Kei rolled, the colorful rainbow liquid splashed, flying everywhere and splattered all the Icidrakes below. Some yelped and tried to scrub the color out, but succeeded only in spreading it further. Kei landed safely in her mother’s paws, tired but grinning happily at her pure rainbow coat. She snuggled up to her mother and the tired pup quickly fell fast asleep. As they walked home, the colors dried on all the Icidrakes, some with red, some yellow, some bright green or blue. They wore every imaginable shade, and generation after generation would inherit the colors until they became the colors we see today. However, after Kei, no Icidrake was born with pure rainbow colors, some had hints of it, but they where few and far between. Until, several hundreds of generations later, Midnight, an adopted of beautiful and colorful Icidrakes, opened her door to find four small and pure rainbow colored pups sitting in a warm basket on her front door...
