A student sits with his head in his hands, looking up at the clock on the far side of the lecture hall, watching the second hand on the clock move around at its own pace, seemingly ever slower and slower as it makes its unsteady but certain progress. Watching the time move on, waiting for the eventual relief it will bring. The lecturer reels through his notes as he recites his dull sprawl to the assembly.
Suddenly, the lecturer stops mid sentence, looks over the rim of his glasses and up the tiered desks of the lecture hall towards this student, who, having noted the silence more than the noted the speech, looks towards the lecturer and meets his gaze.
After an uncomfortable silence, the lecturer begins to speak.
Time, sir, will pass. Will you?
We live in a convenience world. We long for faster internet connection, shorter aeroplane journeys. Ovens are quickly becoming redundant as people shove things in their microwaves and count the seconds as they wait for their convenience snacks. We complain if people take too long to answer the telephone, we flick through the channels if theres a commercial break.
We live in a world which is in the grip of convenience culture.
And, not for the first time, were not going to be on-message with the world around us and try to fit in. Because what I am going to say is relatively short and sweet (compared to most of my waffle)- education is not an overnight thing. And so the Fatum Operandi isnt about instant results. Certainly, I hope that from first accessing this site you will learn something that will help you, but know this-
This isnt a drive-thru MacDonalds. You dont just drive in, pick up knowledge and drive out again.
If you think you can drive in and get a spiffy emblem and a print out certificate, youre tragically mistaken. Education is a life long process, and once youve committed yourself to the persuit of knowledge, youll find it as addictive as any drug. Dont expect to come here, study for an exam, and then put it down.
What we do here is learn. For life. And thats not something you can put a time limit on.
