To be honest, this meditation, due to its essential requirements of a pencil and paper, challenges a few peoples preconceptions of meditation, probably due in part to some stereotypical image of a cross-legged guru. However, challenging stereotypes and fixed mindsets isnt something we shy away from in the FO. I found this exercise making its way slowly around the more insane part of society, used it, found it extremely valuable and decided to write down.
The idea is to get your mind more conscious of the thought processes going
on within its winding catacombs. More conscious of your subconscious
thoughts; they can bear fruit.
And of course, reaping that fruit while still being focussed.
So, having gathered your pencil and paper, seat yourself comfortably and select a word; it isnt important whether its a word which is meaningful to you or an entirely random one, what matters it that its a word.
Focus on the word; at first, you may want to close your eyes and visualise it; this is entirely understandable. As you see fit, eventually progress towards not visualising it, and ultimately doing this with your eyes open.
Inevitably, in attempting to focus on the word, other thoughts will meander
into your mind.
Each time another word or phrase enters your mind, write it down on a piece
of paper.
When another word or phrase enters, write that down below it. And the next,
and the next.
Continue until you are able to focus on the word without others entering
your mind, then carry on focussing on that word for as long as feels
comfortable.
As soon as you have finished this, go out and have a run or a cycle, or do something energetic, as such exercises can often lull you so much that parts of your body can in effect go to sleep.
