The darkside is a problem child. We know exactly where the lightside wants to be placed. We suspect the shadows don�t want to be placed at all. But the darkside is the problem child of the FA; where should it be in the context of the FA?
There are many people who want the darkside to be proudly dominant; to be so powerful that nothing can attack it, to crush all those that seek to oppose it. They want to build it into a bastion of invincibility.
Historically the FA darkside has not been like this. Possibly the foundation stones are weak, possibly the design is at fault. What I have noted is that the structure itself seems to crumble when this is strived for. In the time I have known it, the darkside has suffered from weak leadership, inactivity, infighting, rebellion, coups, lack of respect and lack of discipline � it is is a darkside that suffers from a lack of leadership, focus and inspiration. I argue that this is down to a fundamental misinterpretation of where the darkside should be placed.
I believe that the darkside thrives when it is not a dominant player. I believe that the darkside should be elusive and selective, offering an alternative for those who care to seek it out. I see the darkside as a voice of protest, of difference, of discord � the opposition to the main party, the Other to the Self culture. Its creative spirit comes from discord and destruction. If it were the dominant player at the FA, its council are under immense pressure to work in harmony and appear united; this is simply not how the darkside works. How can you expect a group of fiercely individual, ruthless people to work in harmony? Besides, once it has dominance, what is there to strive for?
Yet as the underdog, the darkside comes into its own. It is the underground, it subverts, it questions, it dissents. It is the rebel, the guerrilla, the voice howling outside the gates. Its spirit can be unleashed in all its anarchic untamed wildness. It can be sacred and profane, tender and ruthless. It can be individual. It can be yours.
By expecting it to conform to the FA model of a dominant aspect, you are clipping its wings. Let it soar.
