              Political Wings in Contemporary Iran

Severance of Iran-US relations during the past 23 years has cast a pall over realities dominating modern-day Iran, specifically in regard to the country’s power hubs and political wings.

In a drive to shed light on these realities, an online course in Political Wings in Contemporary Iran will be offered in both Farsi and English for interested individuals, research centers, and colleges.

The course will offer a wide range of information on Iran’s contemporary political issues and developments. Some of the areas that will be covered are as follows:

  • political structure of the Iranian government
  • rise of political wings from 1981 onward
  • theoretical and practical tenets of the political wings
  • social, political, economic, and cultural tendencies of each wing
  • major political groups and their subdivisions
  • prominent political personalities
  • line-up of the wings following the 1997 presidential elections that brought Mohammad Khatami to power
  • in-depth study of dailies, weeklies, monthlies published by various wings
  • ongoing discussion on latest political developments in Iran, specially hot topics such as Iran-US relations

As admission is limited, those interested are requested to pre-register by June 15, 2002. Registration and payment information, as well as full details of the course, will be subsequently sent to those who pre-register.

The course will run for 5 months, during which material will be emailed to the participants, and one-on-one and/or group online discussions will be held on the material covered. Participants can always email or fax their questions to the instructor.

The course will be taught by veteran US-based political scientist and journalist Dariush Sajjadi (MA political science). Sajjadi, formerly a specialist at the Center for Research and Studies at the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS), has taught courses on modern Iranian politics at classes held by Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. In his 16-year career as journalist, Sajjadi has conducted interviews with famous Iranian political figures and lectured on Iran’s political developments. His columns, articles, and analyses have appeared in Iranian and American media over the past years. For a glimpse of his works, check out his website at http://www.geocities.com/dariushsajjadi.
