Timeline of Dracula, by Bram Stoker (Done so far: Only chapters 1-4)

The diary of Jonathan Harker

1st May

Jonathan left Munich.

2nd May

Jonathan reached Vienna in the morning. He left for Klausenburgh after nightfall and stayed at the Hôtel Royale.

3rd May, nightfall

Jonathan reached Bistritz. He stayed at the Golden Krone Hotel, where he received a letter of welcome from Dracula.

===============================================================================================================

At this point Jonathan had detected nothing suspicious about the Count.

             ================================================================================================================

4th May

Jonathan found that his landlord was “somewhat reticent”, pretending not to understand his German on inquiries for details. Both the landlord and his wife would not tell Jonathan Harker anything about Dracula.

            ===================================================================================================================

They did not want to get involved in Dracula’s plans for Jonathan, knowing full well what they were.

                 =================================================================================================================

When he was leaving Jonathan’s landlady gave him a crucifix and warned him not to go and see Dracula, warning him that at midnight on the eve of St. George’s day “all evil things in the world would have full sway”. Jonathan ignored the warnings.

=========================================================================================================

The landlady could not watch him walk to his doom, and so gave Jonathan the crucifix hoping it would protect him against the evil of Dracula.

                 =========================================================================================================

5th May

Passengers on the coach, as well as passers-by outside the inn, seemed to fear for Jonathan. He saw many guards against the evil eye.

========================================================================================================

Dracula was something evil in the eyes of his people. The guards against the evil eye were made for Jonathan, to protect him from Dracula.

                 ========================================================================================================

6th May

Along the road, the driver of Jonathan’s calèche seemed strangely relieved that Dracula was not waiting for Jonathan. He was about to continue to Bukovina when another driver, sent by Dracula, arrived. Jonathan noticed the incredible strength of the driver when his luggage was taken, his gleaming red eyes in the lamplight and his brilliant white teeth.

At midnight Jonathan noticed that the driver had been going round in circles waiting for this moment. The driver seemed to possess several strange powers – he could tame horses easily and ward off wolves about to attack with a wave of his arm.

Jonathan also saw blue flames. The driver got off the coach, supposedly to investigate them, and Jonathan found that he could see the flames even though the driver was standing in front of him and would have blocked his line of vision.

On arrival at the castle, he realised that Dracula might have been the coach driver.

===================================================================================================================

The coach driver had inhuman strength, gleaming red eyes and brilliant white teeth. He also seemed to possess strange power over animals (the horses and the wolves)

Dracula did not want Jonathan to arrive until midnight, when he would have full strength. That is why the coach driver went round in circles to delay Jonathan until the moment when “all evil things in the world would have full sway”.

Jonathan later realised that Dracula was the only person in the caste, and that he might have been the coach driver.

 ===================================================================================================================

8th May

Jonathan was shaving when Dracula suddenly greeted him. Jonathan was surprised because there seemed to be no reflection of Dracula in any mirror. On noticing that Jonathan had cut himself, Dracula flung the shaving glass out of the window. Later he found that he was a prisoner in the castle, and panicked.

===================================================================================================================

Dracula had no reflection in a mirror. Jonathan also realised that Dracula had him imprisoned in the castle.

 ===================================================================================================================

8th May, Midnight

Jonathan had a long talk with the Count.

===================================================================================================================

Jonathan realised that the Count did not sleep.

 ===================================================================================================================

12th May

Dracula asked Jonathan to stay for a month in the castle. Later Jonathan saw the Count climbing out of the castle down a wall, “just as a lizard moves along a wall”.

===================================================================================================================

After a few nights with Dracula Jonathan concluded that the Count did not eat, did not sleep at night and was never present in the daytime. He also saw Dracula climb down the castle wall. It confirmed his suspicions about Dracula.

 ===================================================================================================================

15th May

Once again Jonathan saw the Count climb down the castle wall.

16th May

Jonathan had an encounter with the vampire brides.

===================================================================================================================

Dracula seemed to strike fear in the hearts of the brides. Dracula also mentioned that the brides could only have Jonathan after he himselfwas done with him. Later Dracula threw the brides a sack which Jonathan believed contained a bay.

 ===================================================================================================================

18th May

Jonathan found that the room in which he had seen the brides was sealed. Forcibly.

===================================================================================================================

Dracula did not want Jonathan to see the brides again.

 ===================================================================================================================

19th May

Jonathan tried to get the gypsies who were camping outside to deliver his letters but failed.

31st May

Jonathan found that every scrap of paper, his writing materials and his travel items with his clothing had vanished.

===================================================================================================================

Dracula did not want Jonathan to leave. Dracula also wanted the people of Buda Pesth to believe that Jonathan was in no harm, and hence stole his clothes to deliver Jonathan’s letters and masquerade as him.

 ===================================================================================================================

17 June

Jonathan found that his room had been sealed. He called to Slovaks for help, in vain.

24th June

Jonathan saw the Count climbing out of his window in the suit Jonathan had worn when he had arrived at the castle. Later he beheld a horrifying scene in which the mother of a baby Dracula had stolen was devoured by wolves (that Dracula had summoned).

25th June

Jonathan limbed into Dracula’s room. Saw Dracula lying in the chapel, with no signs to prove that he was alive.

===================================================================================================================

Dracula wasn’t alive.

 ===================================================================================================================

29th June

Tried to leave Dracula’s castle, but Dracula summoned wolves which made him wait till morning.

===================================================================================================================

This action only served to confirm that Dracula was one of the dreaded Nosferatu of legend.

===================================================================================================================

30th June

Saw Dracula once again in the chapel. Dracula was “lying there like a filthy leech, simply gorged with blood”. Tried to kill Dracula but only cut his forehead. Jonathan later tried to escape castle Dracula by scaling that castle walls down.
