| The Temple of Kukulcan, Chichen Itza. This impressive 75-foot pyramid is the biggest surviving Mayan pyramid on the Kukulcan Peninsula. Built on top of a smaller like pyramid, it is also called "el Castillo" or "the Castle", a name bestowed upon the monument by the Spanish, who later colonised the peninsula. While walking through the jungles of Kukuclan, they saw the top of the pyramid through the lush leaves and yelled to the others: "Look! A castle!" Chichen Itza is perhaps the most famous Mayan cultural site in the world, and one of the richest and largest archeological remnants of that civilization. Founded in 445 B.C., and inhabited until 1204 A.D. when it was mysteriousely abandoned, Chichen Itza lies about 120 miles west of Cancun. (Source: http://www.docancun.com/mayan_ruins.htm) |
