They were the Washingtons of Salgrave Manor in Northhamptonshire, who traced their ancestry to a Norman knight of the twelfth century. About the year 1657 John and Lawrence, brothers emigrated to America and shortly after purchased estates in Westmoreland County VA. The eldest son of John was Lawrence the grandfather of the future President. |
