Letter to the Editor 12-16-03
We have captured Saddam Hussein. Trapped in a hole (AJC, 12/16/03), a disheveled dictator was arrested and humiliated as we taped his medical exam. Iraqis celebrated.  Americans celebrated. Is this a proud day for America? Hardly. If anything is clear, it is that this pathetic man has not been running the resistance to American occupation of Iraq. Our exhibiting the conquered leader is a throwback to the days of European imperialism, when  Middle-Eastern countries were ruled by the West. As so many people in Iraq have asked, where is the freedom, where is the liberation? American companies are falling all over themselves scrambling for the billions of tax payer dollars and Iraq spoils waiting for them. The so-called Iraq army we have spent months training is deserting in droves. However glad Iraqis are to be rid of Saddam, the prospect of prolonged foreign occupation is daily  more abhorrent to them. Is this the image of America we want in the world? Now that there is no longer a dictator, and certainly no weapons to fear, it is time to support our troops by bringing them home to their families, and support Iraq by letting Iraqis rule.
