Preemptive Mutlitasking- A type of pseudo-multitasking whereby the CPU allows an application a specified period of time and then preempts the processing to give time to another application. Real Mode- A single-tasking operating mode whereby a program has 1024k of memory addresses, has direct access to RAM and uses a 16 bit data path. Registry- A database that windows uses to store hardware and soft ware configuration information, usere prefences and setup information. Root Dicetory- The main directory created when a hard drive or disk is frist formatted. Sector- on a disk surface on segment of a track, whis almost always contains 512 bytes of data. Shadow RAM- Shadowing ROM- ROM programming code copied into RAM to speed upi the system operation, because of the faster access speef of RAM. Shell- The portion of the OS that relates to the user and to applications. Startup BIOS- BIOS loacted on the mother board. System Resource- A channel, line or address on the motherboard that can be used by the CPU or a device for communication. Subdirectory- A directory or folder contianed in another directory or folder. System.ini- A Text configuration file used by windows #.x and supported by Windows 9x/Me for backwacks-compatilibilty. Temination-And-Stay-Resident - TSR- A program that is loaded to memory and remains dormant until called on, such as a screen saver.
