| Chapter 4 Vocab. Continued Surge Suppressor/Protector- A devie or power strip designed to protcet electronic equipment from power surges and spikes. Suspend Time- The time before a "Green" system will reduce 99% of its activity. After this time. the system needs a warm-up time so that the CPU, monitor and hard drive can reach full activity. Tower Case- The largest type ot personal computer case. Tower cases stand vertically and can be as high as 2 feet tall. They have more drive bays and are a good choice for computer users who anticipate making significate upgrades. Trans fromer- A device that changes the ration of current to voltage. A computer power supply is a basically a trnsfromer and a rectifier. Trnsistor- An electronic device that can regulate electricity and act as a logical gate or switch for an electrical signal. UPS- Uninterruptible Power Supply- A device designed to provide a backup power supply suring a power failure. Basically a UPS is a battery backup system with an ultrafast sesning device. Volt- V- A measure of potential difference in an electrical circuit. A computer ATX power supply usaully provides +12V, -12V, +5V, -5V and 3.3V. Voltage- Electrical differential that cause current to flow, measured in volts. Watt- W- The unit used to measure power. A typical computer may use a power supply that provides 200 W. Wattage- Electrical power measured in Watts. Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Home |
