Collision of Crustal Plates
HOME          BACK
This is an attempt to show some what occurs when two crustal plates collide. The dark grey-green matter represents crust formed from volanic eruptions beneath the ocean. Sediment is depositcd on top of it as well as adjacent crust that makes up a continental landmass. The collision produces a "snowplow" effect at the edge of the continent with folding and faulting of the crust. The grey-green material is heavier and is over-ridden. Eventually such material undergoes partial melting and magma results.
