Topten Events in VN 1998
  1. Dong devaluated 17% from VND11900/US$ to VND13900/US$, compared to Oct. 1996 the dong has been devaluated more than 26%.
  2. Foreign Investment fell 40% vs. 1997. The fall started in the middle of 1996, one year before the regional crisis.
  3. Hanoi hosted the sixth ASEAN summit in Dec.
  4. Football Tiger Cup was well organized in Hanoi in Sep. Vietnam got the silver.
  5. Severe calamities including droughts, floods, typhoons hit the central areas.
  6. Drug addition continues to rise despite the increasing number of death sentences for traffickers (e.g. Vu Xuan Truong and gang).
