Hi friends, this section of my siteicompiti.net deals with
the alternative energy sources to coal, oil and gas and environmental problems.
A useful page(I hope) for students who will need informations
about alternative
energy sources. Since we are fastly running out of fossil fuels we intend to
inform people of the alternitive energy sources so that they would know
of possible solutions to the depleting fossil fuel problem.
I decided to write in English because its a universal language...Im an Italian
Student in Sciences and I m afraid because my teachers always talks about great environmental harm has been caused due to the fact that the world is over-reliant on fossil fuels. Air Pollution and Acid Rain ,alternate and renewable energy....
But in reality? The idea that protection of the natural environment is one of the main duties of civilized society is simply not all rooted in this
Society. On the contrary, despite the measures that are sometimes taken by the authorities,
it seems to me as if one of its main task is to
destroy nature. So The Only Way for me to do something... is create
my section about our Planet problems!
Environment is our physical surroundings.
This includes both human (man-made), social and physical (natural) features.
Natural features include soil, the atmosphere, vegetation and wildlife.
Human features include housing, transport and industry.
Social features include things such as culture, language and political systems.
Geographers are concerned about human action in the environment.
Human interference with the environment causes problems such as soil erosion,
global warming and acid.
You may ask how we as individuals can have an impact on the environment.
Our actions can help to increase and decrease the problems highlighted above.
I was very surprised when I read about famous great American actors
,all
together for these important problems. So
Im glad to inform you that
talents
like Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Ben Stiller are very close to
these problems! Thats very important for us. They are symbols, they are famous and they can give to us a strong message(sometimes stronger than scientists)
and they have all great projects...and so in this page you wont find informations
about their works, their movies but about their ideas ...they take action about Our planet : the earth, our beautiful planet!
The world of today has seen over the last century an increase in energy demand. And with this energy demand has comes the increased use of coal as the major player in the energy picture. "SO2 contributes to acid rain. This has led to over-acidity of soils and lakes". The acid in the atmosphere mixes with snow, rain, fog, dust, or other media, which pollute and effect biological as well as non-biological targets.
Acid rain is defined in correlation with, obviously, acidity and how it is measured; using a pH scale, with the number 7 being neutral. Consequently, a substance with a pH value of less than 7 is acidic, while one of a value greater than 7 is basic. Moreover, the pH scale is logarithmic; that is, a substance of pH of 4 is 10 times more acidic than another with a pH of 5. Generally, the pH of 5.6 has been used as the baseline in identifying acid rain, although there has been many debates over the accept ance of this value. Interestingly enough, a pH of 5.6 is the pH value of carbon dioxide in equilibrium with distilled water. Hence, acid ran is defined as any rainfall that has an acidity level beyond what is expected in non-polluted rainfall. In essence, any precipitation that has a pH value of less than 5.6 is considered to be acid precipitation.
NRDC (National Resources Defence Council on Global Warming)
uses law, science, and the support of more than 500,000 members nationwide to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.
Global Warming is a reality. NRDC experts are fighting to shift the perception of global warming from an abstract threat to a pressing reality, and helping citizens take action by pressing business and industry to consume less energy and build more efficient products. And by working for laws that will speed these innovations. Together, these actions form a practical, economical approach to solving this urgent problem. Here you are Leonardo's Speech at an NRDC news conference Thursday morning (2/7/2003)
LOS ANGELES (AP) -
"I want to thank the NRDC and The Rolling Stones for creating this event tonight. We are all here to keep the pressure on our politicians and our corporations to recognize the drastic implications of global warming.
The word warming sounds almost inviting, that in a world twenty years from now, we will all be living in a tropical paradise - where the extent of our problems will be pondering which SPF sunscreen to use.
But don't be fooled by semantics, thousands of climate scientists agree that global warming is not only the most threatening environmental problem, but one of the greatest challenges facing all of humanity.
The fact is we are pumping way too much carbon dioxide from our cars, refineries and power plants into the atmosphere much faster than the land and seas can absorb it. The accumulating gas is trapping heat and upsetting the world's climate.
It only took five to nine degrees to take us out of the last ice age. Now a couple degrees difference in today's temperatures may seem insignificant, but again, five to nine degrees is all that separates us from catastrophic global change.
We must break this cycle now - and we must make it a clean break. And the good news is we've never had better solutions. I drove here today in my hybrid vehicle that gets 50 miles to the gallon and has less than half of the pollution of a normal car.
The technology to make safer, cleaner cars and SUVs is here today. Pollution free renewable energy sources from wind and solar power are also available today.
The environmental age is here - let's reduce our dependency on oil, foreign and domestic - let's develop a global politics that accelerates the transition to clean fuels and sustainable energy from renewable sources.
As we progress into the twenty-first century, I urge everyone to adopt an environmental lifestyle. It's not that difficult; make your next car a hybrid, vote for leaders who care about protecting our health, the air and our environment, support non-profits like the NRDC who are actually making a difference.
And let's set an example now for future generations and move environmentalism from being the philosophy of a passionate minority to a way of life that automatically integrates ecology into governmental policy and normal living standards."
Thank you very much for your time
