What Floats My Boat

As far as musical tastes go, I’m not sure if I can say I like a little bit of everything. I’m always fascinated by interests from yesteryear (which explains why I have been addicted to V-H1’s I Love the _____ ever since it was devised). That and I am mostly anti-bandwagon. Right around 1996/1997, popular music really hit the skids for me. That or I first entered junior high, where many people liked whatever was popular. Either way, I do like being different from my friends in musical taste, it makes me feel unique.
Rock is definitely my favorite type. Classic rock (Who, Beatles, Rolling Stones) is cool. ’60s rock is interesting, especially on the box set
Nuggets. I do like some metal, but mostly Metallica. I appreciate and definitely like classic punk rock (Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones). I have disdain for most pop-punk, yet I do enjoy Green Day at times. I was into grunge a few years after it hit big in the ’90s, and Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots were my favorites. Now the only holdover from that era is STP. But groups like Nickelback and Creed? Ehhh. My tastes have stretched out to include Roxy Music, Alan Parsons Project, Yazoo, and other lesser known artists from the past.
Other forms of music? As far as rap goes, I’m way old-school. I got into the big hits by Grandmaster Flash (“The Message,” “White Lines”) and am fascinated by “Rappers Delight.” I used to be anti-rap, but I have learned to enjoy the old stuff. I don’t need any Nelly, Eminem, or Snoop Dogg. I’m not big on R&B, mostly older stuff, and I appreciate ’60s Motown. George Starostin likened it to an assembly line, but there are still some darn good classics of the era. All-time favorite Motown tune: “Uptight” by Stevie Wonder. That I-minor VII progression rocks.
Country? Maybe one or two older classics by Johnny Cash and George Jones. Not my cup of tea. Folk? I am big on Bob Dylan, but little else. Pop? I do have a few perverse guilty pleasures within that genre. But pop as a whole is disposable, esp. that icky teen-pop that ruled the U.S. in ’99-’00. Classical? When I’m in the right mood, yes. I do love hearing choral music sometimes, being a choir geek. And I have renewed appreciation for music of the past: classical, baroque, romantic, etc. Thank you, MUS 100 class.
In closing, I will mainly focus on rock reviews on this site, because most of my favorites are in that genre. But on my Mix CD’s you’re likely to find more diverse fare.
