MUSIC REVIEW SITES
The list of music review sites has been growing as of late, but the first five sites are among the ones that inspired me to start my own site. The other review sites are ones I have been checking out since I started the site.
Prindle Rock and Roll Record Review Site
Mark Prindle, no doubt, is one of the most notorious music reviewers on the Internet. His style is totally random, sometimes going off on all kinds of tangents, whatever is on his mind at the moment. Some may find it kind of self-indulgent, but you can't ignore his diverse taste in music. He used to have a feature that allowed people to send review pages of artists he wouldn't do, but unfortunately he ran out of space. He still posts reader comments, though.
Only Solitaire: George Starostin's Music Reviews
I'd hate to sound biased, but this is one of my favorite sites on the Web, period. George's reviews are quite lengthy, analytical, and he touches on every song on the record. Even better is now he's a bit more open to newer music like R.E.M. and the Talking Heads. The only drawback is his essay-format works against "bad" albums, as he will bash the poor record like there was no tomorrow. Even then, it serves as comedy. Very interactive, too, I have some reader comments on his page!
Wilson and Alroy's Record Reviews
Here's the first review site I've been to, and I believe it was one of the first Web music review sites out there. These two are pretty no-nonsense and straight-forward, which may be easier for some to handle than Prindle and Starostin. It's a drawback for me, they can be overtly blunt at times. They also cover artists not many other web reviewers would touch, like Destiny's Child and Young MC. It's a good starting place for reading record reviews.
John McFerrin's Reviews of Music
A Web music reviewer of somewhat lesser status than the above three, but nevertheless good at what he does. He and Starostin have very similar tastes in music, and somewhat similar writing styles. The main difference is McFerrin's reviews are a bit shorter than Starostin's. Not as many artists here as other sites, but that's fine. It's interactive too.
Music Junkies Anonymous
This site is sort of a library of sorts. Nick Karn, among other reviewers, contributes band reviews, all on one site. Those who want comprehensive full-discography reviews may be disappointed, but it's still very worthy. One big plus is with so many reviewers, there's bound to be diversity. You even find out what people think of those new-fangled bands like Limp Bisquik and Effervescence.
Brad's Completely Useless Record Reviews
Probably the best darn Prindle ripoff on the Web. OK, that was too harsh. It's true that Brad takes a lot from the Book of Prindle, but his reviews are witty enough to hold their own. Only problem is he is one of those people whom if he doesn't like something, it's the 'worst song ever.' But check out this site anyways, it's growing pretty fast.
Don Ignacio's Music Reviews
This guy has just started up his page, but it's pretty impressive so far. He goes so far to rate every song, and that goes into his album rating. Some math formula. It's a lot of fun, and anyone who treads into Michael Bolton territory must either be highly respected for his boldness or really stupid. I'll go with the former, since he's rightfully hard on Bolton.
Scott's Rock and Soul Reviews
This guy is a machine. He has a huge and diverse discography, and his reviews are straightforward with no Prindle-isms. Not that there's anything wrong with Prindle, just thought I'd give some contrast. He was a critic for the music 'zine Goldmine for a year, but he ain't no sell-out.
CapnMarvel's Rock Album Review Bonanza
Another Prindle disciple! Ryan Atkinson's body of work is more centered to rock than Prindle's, but he's still very prolific. Only problem is, he can out-Prindle Prindle himself with weird non-sequitors and rants, which can detract from the experience. (Special note: If you follow any kind of religion, prepare to see it bashed to pieces on this site). But he does not bullshit around when reviewing, he's honest to a tee. Gotta like that.
Creative Noise
Too bad for me, Brian Burks abandoned this site in mid 2001, back when I was still only reading the Prindle and Starostin review sites. This is an archive courtesy of Starostin (what CAN'T the man do????), and it stands out in my mind by having very good reviews of artists like Elvis Costello, Squeeze, and Marshall Crenshaw. I don't see those artists often on the WRC.
OTHER WEB SITES
What's that? Little Timmy fell down a well? Wait a minute, that's not it....you want some links to regular, non-review sites? Allright, here ya go...some of my favorite sites and such...
