It washes over us in wave upon wave
The despair of those of us who are alone
It is dark, and it smells bad but we are
Comfortable in its presence
Picking up the pieces of our souls
As the ones we love walk away forever
They can't see our pain, or they just don't care
About the depth of our hurt
Foolish we are who love so deeply
We never learned to close the doors of our hearts
And the ones who would take advantage know this
They see the target, and seldom do they miss
The tears stain our cheeks like warpaint
Our eyes rimmed in red, our noses running
A crying jag we can't stop, no one can see
The one we cry for doesn't stop to look
The pain is ours to bear alone, in silence
With a certain song playing on the stereo
To remind us of what we wanted most
It wasn't much, just to be wanted
Take a jagged breath, and wipe our eyes
Take a bath, put on some perfume
And go out into the world as if all were good
We will wait until dark before we cry again
Tears of fools always fall in the dark
With no one to see but our demons
Who laugh at our foolish hopes and dreams
The salt of our tears burns the open wounds of our heart
The heart will heal in time souls become whole
Then we fall in love again, and we wait
For the disappointment, the pain, the end
So we may again cry the tears of fools
