HUNTING MOOSE, CARIBOU AND REINDEER |

Moose are plentiful in the area and can be hunted by road, four wheeler, snow mashine, boat and cannoe. However since this is a large annimal even a two year old may dress out at 400 lbs of meat. Freight costs to and from the villages is about 90 cents lb. and about 70 cents lb from Nome to Anchorage. You will need more time and equiipment to harvest a Moose than smaller game. |

Caribou pictured left and reindeer are below. Caribou have only come to the Nome area in the last few years. They may or may not be accessable depending on time of year. Caribou are accessable most of the time in Shishmaref. All Reindeer herds are privatley owned and will cost more to harvest. You can keep a fine trophy set of horns and the hide can be tanned at the local Shishmaref Tannery. I prefer killing these animals between September an November for the best meat quality. However I did process some Caribou in Barrow February 2003 and it was quite good. |

Pictured left and below are Muskox. Muskox are very plentiful here and a limited number of permits are granted by Fish and Game with restrictions on age and sex of animal to be harvested. Muskox meat is very good. All of the animals above can be harvested by Archery with more flexable locations and seasons. This could be a very rewarding experience for any Martial Artists. We recommend that you try to plan as far in advance as possible. Please email us at [email protected] |
