Over Nite
Sensation (1973)
Over-Nite
Sensation was, say the critics specifically made to be a commercial
success, but it is still a long way from mainstream! Over-Nite Sensation was
one of Zappa's best selling albums and the one a non-Zappa follower would be
most likely to own, as well as Sheik Yerbouti. It is however a good enjoyable
album, although too short at only just more than half an hour in length. It
contains entertaining and well composed rock music, but it never totallty
encapsulates you. 'Camarillo Brillo' the opener is my favourite track on the
album, it is quirky and catchy. 'I'm the Slime' follows, this became a firm
favourite of the Zappa faithful and it is a good song, but hardly great. The
latter part of the album is better with another of Zappa's signature
tunes 'Dinah-Moe Humm', a great, rude rock song, followed by 'Montana' another
well known Zappa track about a dental-floss farmer in Montana!!. As a whole the
album is good, but never reaches the heights of Zappa's earliest offerings. If
you want straight forward rock with quirky, original and fun lyrics then you
will enjoy this album, but you will be dissappointed if you expect it to be
Zappa's finest work.
