Student stabbed 6 to 8 times

November 9, 2004

AMHERST -- According to reports in media sources, a University of Massachusetts student was stabbed between six and eight times early Halloween morning in the Alpine Commons apartment complex.

The victim, a 19-year-old Dedham man, received the injuries in a fight. The man who stabbed the victim was wearing a "Jason"-type hockey mask, made famous by the "Friday the 13th" movies.

Police said they had identified a suspect one day after the incident. The suspect is reportedly not a UMass student. No weapon has been recovered.

A second man was involved in the fight, according to police. This man, who has only been identified as an Arlington resident, was what police called "an involved participant." He reportedly received injuries, which were treated at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

Police said the man's car had bloodstains on it and seized it for further investigation.

The victim had been listed in guarded condition as of Nov. 2, after having been transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for medical treatment the night of the stabbing. However, it was unclear as of press time whether his condition had changed or if he had been released from the hospital.
