A large fight on North Pleasant St., in the area commonly referred to as "frat row," led to the stabbing of six University of Massachusetts students early Sunday morning, according to the Amherst police department.

Few details were released as of press time, but police believe the fight involved approximately six to 10 people.

Police responded to the incident around 12:33 a.m. and found that two men had been stabbed. One man, a 21-year-old Amherst resident, was stabbed in the head. He was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where he was listed in stable condition as of 10 a.m. on Sunday. The other man, a 20-year-old Amherst resident, was stabbed in the bicep. He was treated and released from Baystate Medical.

About 45 minutes later, at 1:12 a.m., police were called back to the same area on a report of a fight. Two additional men were found to be stabbed.

Police say a 20-year-old Somerville man was stabbed multiple times in the back. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center and was in stable condition as of early Sunday.

An 18-year-old man from Woodcliff, N.J. was stabbed in the side. He was treated and released from Baystate Medical.

A third man, an 18-year-old from North Attleboro, was transported by a friend from the scene to the University of Massachusetts Infirmary for a laceration on his forearm. He was treated and released.

At 2:25 a.m., Amherst police responded to an apartment at 17 Southpoint Drive on a report of a man who had been stabbed in the hand. The man was identified only as a 23-year-old Amherst resident. He was treated and released from Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. Police believe his wound was received in the melee on Frat Row.

Police say different injuries indicate that there was more than one weapon used at the scene. The reason for the fight is still unclear and the matter is still under investigation.

No information about the victims was released by police as of press time.
