Duvel
Morgit have been doing it well since 1871, so it's
not surprising this Belgian ale ranks top of our
list. The devil's beer clocks in at 8.5% and
scored big when sampled on Sam's 24th birthday. |
The
bottle looks like a squat dwarf. The liquid
assaults the senses with a muddy, mowed-grass
fullness. Burps of gardeny moores. Impares
judgement: clever beer... |

A
German wheat beer with a solid 8 percent alcohol.
This big-flavoured beer is definately a oncer. |
The
label makes me think of a chocolate bar, and
indeed our final flavour analysis was "banana
choc-chip icecream". |

From
gorgeous Nelson, New Zealand comes a fine wheat
beer of 5%. Tasted on my quarter century.
That was when I was still standing. |
Spring
blending into Summer: Quite effervescent, fresh,
fragrance of cut lawn, begs for a curry. |

A
pilsener like no other! Locally (and organically)
produced and easily my favourite beer of all time.
4.4%. Reminds me of Grandad's grapes. |
The
label suggests being out in the country; simple,
the good-life. Slightly effervescent - malty and
fresh, grapey. |

This
is a dark barley wine from London with a whopping
7.2% alcohol content. We uggest sampling as a
skiing holiday fireside oncer! |
Burnt
toffy - charcoal. Nicoteen stained. Amber colour
- big head. It says "Watch out!".
Smells like Velutto Rosso. Drink with pastachios
& blue vein. Salty. |

The
alphabetical stout from Singapore won itself an 8,
but in retrospect, I think we were tricked by
that big 8%... |
Treacle.
Bitter as an ex-lover. Dense. Black as hell's poo.
Porn movie, mud-tarseal. |

Another
Singaporian beer. The label says 5% and screams
of colonisation. |
Grapey.
Big lager tip, effervesent taste, disipates
quickly. Pilsener is good. Eat: brie, gouda. |

Founded
on the stunning West Coast of NZ, Montieth's have
been crafting fine beers since the gold days.
This limited release ale is flavoured with Rata
honey and I recommend a refreshing couple round
the BBQ this summer. It should be noted that the
current release (2001) has a more chemical
aftertaste and should score an 8. |
Yum!
Honey to make bears go mad! Absolutely delicious
initial burst (though aftertaste is much less).
Doesn't taste like beer. Magic! |
