Thiusands and churches were built
i Europe ion the Middle Ages. They were the most significant builings of
their time. The walls of the church were painted with picture tellig stories
form the Bible.
Monks and monasteies
Beside churches, many monasteries
were also built in the Middle ages. the people who lived in the monasteries
were called monks. The monks had to give up all their possessions and they
did not marry.
In the middle Ages, monasteries
were centres of learning and eduvcation. Monks acted as doctors, caring
for the sick and the poor. They also provided shelter for travellers.
Education
For hundres of years, priestsand
monks were the only educated people in Europe. They started schools in
monasteries to teach childern to read and write.
By the 12th century the Christian Church
starte universities in western Europe. The universities of Paris , oxford
and Cambrigde were founded around that period.
Before the invention of printing, book
were few and expensive, Monks copied out the Bible and other books.
