Year Seven History
This piece of work was completed by: Kultej Singh Rehal How
did the Normans gain and keep control of England after the Battle of
Hastings?’ This
essay will tell you about the Normans control over England after the
Battle of Hastings. It will explain how the Normans kept in control, how
they made sure that the English wouldn’t even think of rebelling and
what the Normans introduced. After
the Battle of Hastings, the Normans took over England and they
introduced the ‘Feudal System’. They introduced the Feudal System
because then they could keep the Normans higher than the English. The
English people were made into villagers and had to work for their local
lords who were the knights and in return for this the knights gave them
land which they got from the Barons and Bishops. If the English people
were made into important and popular people, they would go against
Normandy. The
Domesday book was made so the king who was William ‘the Conqueror’,
could find out how much tax he could draw from the different regions. He
did this so the villages had to give tax to the king so he could get
more and more wealthy. He could get more people fighting in his army. The
Normans had to make sure that English wouldn’t rebel because for one
thing, there was a lot more English people than the Normans. So the
Normans burnt down houses and sometimes even tortured people just to say
‘we are tougher and stronger than you so don’t start thinking of
rebelling’. If people didn’t know that the Normans did these things
and was planning to rebel, other people discouraged them not to. The
Motte and Bailey castles were built in this way because if the English
were going to get them, the Normans would be safe. As you can see, the
English couldn’t possibly get over, through or under the moat and if
they did, they would have to climb the hill and then get passed the
fence in which by then, the Normans would have found out and got them
instead. In this case the punishment would most likely be death. To
my conclusion, the Normans kept good control over England with the
Feudal system and the tough actions against the English. |
