RKKimaiyo April 2000

Incredible bridge, isn't it? There are lots of tales to tell about the Cooper River Bridge weekend. RoadKill was there. We will try to revisit some of those good times. Many of you have visited the RoadKill Racing web page http://www.geocities.com/RKBILL (we've had over a thousand hits so far) and have seen first hand the great time that was had by all. RoadKill Kimaiyo took over 500 pictures that weekend. Actually Billy and Benny took a few as well. Web Master Billy had to work under constant pressure from our fans to get the pictures up in a hurry. He met expectations! About 150 pictures made the cut. We couldn't use them all so if you didn't see your picture don't get upset…the RoadKill Racing Team will be at other races. Keep track of our schedule and come meet with us. We love to take pictures and tell stories. People are the best thing about this world we live in…followed closely by beer and birds.

Tommy Condons was the place to be on that Saturday night. The place was packed and everyone was having a great time. Lots of singing and dancing and drinking. Even that famous runner, Bubba, was there.

Harry Ash won another race last Saturday in Rock Hill (17:02). He went out steady at about 5:20 pace through the first mile. There were two in front of him. Younger guys that apparently went out a little too quick (about 5:10 in 1st mile). Harry stayed on pace and came out the overall winner once again! Harry has been going to Toronto to train over the last few weeks. He seems to really like it up there. He said that he felt "at home" as soon as he got off the plane up there. Apparently it is some form of utopia that is hard to describe. He was talking about going back up there again soon. It really must have been something special. Harry doesn't miss the Cooper River Bridge Run unless there is a REALLY GOOD reason!

On the same day, Bill Peay and Dan Hyde went up to Salisbury for the Run for Your Lungs 5K. Bill ran well, but I don't know his exact finish time. It was around 19:30 I think. Dan ran well too. 16:49. 3rd overall. But he was 2nd in his age group. Richard Ferguson beat him by a stride. Dan was racing hard in the last mile which he was pleased with. The last 300m of the race was on the track at Catawba College and Richard and Dan were sprinting to the line. Richard came out one step ahead for 2nd overall and he sounded disappointed in his race. Apparently he's been suffering from bad allergies lately and that has really slowed him down. Oh well…

RKBill did some quick research in his Dellinger library and came to the conclusion that the course may have been long by a few seconds. They had changed the course this year (always a reason to be suspicious). Based on Dellinger's predicted 5K times (as a function of our Cooper River 10K finish times), the course was long. Science is wonderful.

But my goodness it sounded like they had so much fun!

Ben Hovis is training hard again. He's still drinking lots of beer though. I guess when you are 22, you can do both. Ben is rapidly becoming famous around here. Signing autographs for admirers is commonplace now for him. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the girls are realizing that he is older than he looks. Young Ben still gets carded every time he goes to the grocery store for beer. In fact, once he went to Food Lion and showed his driver's license to the cashier, but they still refused to sell it to him. Then insisted that his ID was fake and that there was no way he was as old as 21. Poor young Ben. Plagued by youthful good looks! How sad. He is one of the track coaches over at Providence Day School, and he blends in so well with the kids! Luckily he just shaved his head so now he stands out a little more. Young Ben is the Andre Agassi of our beloved running community. OK girls, here it is…probably the only reason you came to this web page…young Ben's email address (he's going to be pissed at me but I'll survive!) [email protected]

Have you noticed his tatoos? The one on his back is a recent addition. It's a design that he created years ago when he was really really really young.

Randy Alridge now has a pontoon boat on Lake Norman. That certainly has party possibilities! He was at Cooper River with his friend from West Virginia. Her name is Kyle. I couldn't help but notice Bill and Ben in the background of the picture on the left. They were toasting the runner going up to get her trophy. That's a RoadKill thing…toasting all the age group award winners. It makes the 80+ age group awards much more entertaining, especially at the larger races!

The Depot in Davidson is a great place to go to drink a few beers. Lots of good beers on tap at a really good price. Too bad we don't have a place like that in Matthews. Vinnie's is OK, but the last time I was there they were charging $4.50 for a pint of Guinness. Don't get me wrong, Guinness is definitely worth that price, but I just can't afford to drink it when it's up there in the stars. They usually put something on special though. Kristophers in Matthews was the site of the last RK meeting. It was OK, but not many good beers to choose from.

It's a wonderful time of year.

Well, that's all for now folks. We have come to the April finish line. Send me the gossip and the facts for May. See ya, Danno

Let's have a beer!
