The American Association of Community Theatre [AACT] has its roots
in the National Association of Community Theatre [NACT], an organization
founded in the 1950’s to serve community theatres. In 1958, the leadership
of community theatres held a planning meeting with some of the leaders
of the American Educational Theatre Association [AETA]. This meeting resulted
in the founding of the American Community Theatre Association [ACTA] which
became a provisional Division of AETA
in December, 1959.
In 1963, full Division status was granted ACTA by AETA, which became
the American Theatre Association [ATA] in 1971. In February, 1986, ACTA
disassociated with ATA to become AACT, an independently incorporated organization.
The new association, founded by ten past presidents of ACTA, has adopted
all past officers, award winners, festival activities and other aspects
of NACT and ACTA as part of its own history and legacy.
