Below is a copy of the letter I sent to President Clinton, Vice President Gore, and my Senators and Representatives for my home state of Idaho.
    Letters were also sent to:
  • Senator John McCain (AZ): Senator McCain was himself a Vietnam POW for five and a half years.
  • Sen. John Kerry (MA): Vietnam Veteran and author of the Kerry Amendment.
  • Sen. Bob Kerrey (NE): Vietnam Veteran and supporter of the Kerry Amendment.
  • Sen. Chuck Hagel (NE): Vietnam Veteran and supporter of the Kerry Amendment.
  • Sen. Arlen Specter (PA): Chairman of the Senate Committee on Veteran's Affairs
  • Rep. Bob Stump (AZ): Chairman of the House Committee on Veteran's Affairs
  • Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV: Ranking Minority Member of the same committee.
All letters were sent seperately, and appropriately addressed to each individual.

and I made a few minor changes of my own.

Dear Sir:

I am writing on behalf of Commander Roderick Lewis Mayer, United States Navy. Commander Mayer hailed from Lewiston, Idaho, but was last seen over Long Son Province, North Vietnam, on October 17, 1965. What is being done to determine the fate of Commander Mayer?

This is an American pilot who has remained on the MIA list for 33 years. Doesn't his devotion to his country award him the privilege and honor of being buried in his own homeland soil if he is in fact deceased? If, by some miracle, Mayer is still alive, should he be left behind in a foreign country knowing his country abandoned him? Do his family and loved ones not deserve to know the fate of their son, brother, friend and loved one nor be allowed to put a closure to this after so many years?

Please advise me of any action that is being taken by you or any other elected or appointed official to determine his fate. In the event there is nothing being done, please explain why not, and tell me how you personally plan to correct this and prevent it from ever happening again.
