Welcome to the pup tank, where young gerbils make the passage from puphood to adulthood. There are actually a few "pup tanks" depending how many I have, how old they are, and what gender. The original pup tank is a big, at least 20 gallon, plastic rubbermade tub that all the litters go in (so long as there's enough room, I can't get them mixed up, and they don't fight) once they're weaned. The others I use occaisionally are a two story wire cage (for no more than 3 pups), a 3 store wire cage (5 pups), a plastic tank (3 pups), and a plastic "sweaterbox" tank (depends how old they are). This is where they wait to go to new homes, so they don't drive their parents crazy!! This over here is Whelan Reilly, a schimmel boy. He's currently living in Wisconsin, but before that he spent some time here.

To see what babies are living in these pup tanks, visit my adoption page. Many are looking for good homes!

The pup tank is a great way for the little ones to get socialized. This way they're all in one spot so I don't have to go from one tank to another all the time. They become really friendly with other (not always related) gerbils and with me as well. After about a week they're all flocking towards my hand, wanting to climb up, jump up, get out, etc. They're so full of energy, they dart around all the time, SO funny!

      The Gerbil Loft

Hanging on the side of the pup tank is an old running ball, suspended by part of a wire coathanger. The little ones LOVE curling up in it during the night, jumping into it, and climbing on top of it. It's their favorite toy!

      A Comparison

The plastic bin is the pup tank, and the one on the dresser above it is the 3 girls' 20L. It's actually BIGGER than the 20L, and it cost only $15! (I got it at Target). What a find!

      Whooops!! Foiled again!

Selene has a home in Maryland = )
