Safety Sunday

Each year the CCC has a practice session known as

"The Dreaded Weight Test"

This year it was held on April 20.

We simulate catching a leader fall by hoisting a 100 lbs weight up by a pulley and then dropping it. By leaving 10-15 feet of slack in the line between the weight and the belayer, the weight free falls before being caught, creating surprisingly strong forces.

Hoisting the weight with the belayer seated and anchored.
