Information printed in our current program
Welcome! Heart, Voice, and Soul and I are happy to present this
program for you. It has been my experience that cultural exchange occurs
most directly through exposure to and exploration of the arts. Music sung
from the heart reaches across such cultural boundries as fear and language,
and binds us together by expressing universal human responses to our daily
lives. The violent attempted suppression of African culture by early
American colonials gave birth to two very complex and rich musical genres,
Spiritual/Gospel and Jazz, connected by the incredible drumming tradition
of Africa. Our goal is to bring this shared musical element, the strong
emphasis on rhythm, to life for you - to grow by crossing cultural boundries
- to sing with all our Heart, Voice, and Soul. Thankyou for coming!

What is Heart, Voice, and Soul ?
Heart, Voice, and Soul is the continuation of indepth musical study
by a diverse group of amatuer Viennese singers that share an interest in
Spirituals and Jazz. As in our first two projects, we continue to
present soloists from our own ranks and during rehearsals we work at developing
vocal skills and confidence, alongside the stated goal of steeping ourselves
in music of a distant culture. As you'll see, we've also tried to
stress reaching out to our audiences and showing them how deeply another
culture can touch them. If you want to be involved, you want to organize
a concert in your area, or you want to recieve invitations to our concerts,
we will soon be preparing for our next project (tentative target for concerts
- May 1997). Please contact us using the information below as soon
as possible.
We would like to thank
Information about Daniel Worcester
Dan Worcester was born in Bozeman, Montana (USA) in 1965. Growing
up in North Carolina as the son of a Presbyterian pastor active in the
civil rights movement, he was confronted with, and became sensitized to,
blatant discrimination faced by Afro-americans. He further developed
his cultural awareness musically throughout his studies at the University
of Montana (Missoula). Two of his most rewarding experiences were
performance in Professor Lance Boyd's 'Jazz Workshop' bands and participation
in Professor Donald Carey's 4-month study/perform abroad program, 'Chamber
Chorale in Residence in Vienna' in 1989. After finishing his
degree, Dan left Montana to teach general music, choir and band in the
rural Alaskan village of Kalskag. He returned to Vienna in 1992 and
is currently studying music theory under Professor Christian Minkowitsch
at the Vienna Conservatory. Since 1995 he has directed workshops at the
International Choir Seminar in Zell and der Pram, Austria (directed by
Wolfgang Bruneder, Schola Cantorum Klosterneuberg) and in 1997 guest-directed
at the Kantata Kaltenberg (directed by Johannes Hiemetsberger, Sine Nomine)
