Daniel E. Selby was a surprise baby, I had had several doctors tell me that after 3 miscarriages, I would never be able to conceive and obtain a full term pregnancy. On Feb. 21, 2000 at 4:00 AM I found the test to be positive. I was ecstatic. My husband Daniel was doubtful (after recent events who wouldn't be). At 4 months I had my first sonogram. What a site to see! I finally got to see my baby for the first time. I didn't know that this angel of a baby was a boy. In September of 2000, we had another sonogram and found out that I was carrying a boy. I named him Daniel Edward Shelby. Named after his father and living grand father. On October 31.2000, I delivered by C-section a 7lbs 9 oz, 21 inch" long baby boy. Daniel was a fighter right from the beginning. As the nurses where suctioning his nose out, he had grabbed the suction hose and pulled it out of his nose. He was only minutes old. In January of 2001, 1 week after getting his MMR immunizations, He got German measles. He didn't act sick or anything.

His biggest and most fearing battle he had was the start of his fight for life. It started on April 15, 2004, with a seizure. We treated it like a Seizure Disorder (his father has a seizure disorder). He was discharged from the hospital one week later. On May 16, 2004, we rushed him back into the hospital for seizures. His levels were low. Four days later he was discharged again after getting his levels leveled out.

On June 2, 2004, he started to complain about having a headache. I gave him some medicine for the headache. I didn't know that what was going on in his head was going to put him in the hospital. On June 4, 2004, he said his last words to me. They where "Mommie, I love you," he went to sleep.

On June 5, 2004, he was once again taken to the hospital, I had found him unconscious in his bed. When my husband and I arrived at the hospital, we were told to wait in the "surgery waiting" room. I was petrified. We where then called up to the 4th floor in the children's P.I.C.U., this is where we found out that the surgeon had removed a tumor the size of the left side of his brain. My son had cancer and it had done so much damage. My son wasn't going to recover. Daniel E. Selby remained on a ventilator for 11 days. My husband and I made the hardest decision that I don't want any parent to have to make. On June 17, we had the ventilator removed. My son breathed on his own for 2 days. On June, 19th at 7:37 AM, my son took his last breath. My son died of Glioblastoma Rhabdoid tumor. A rare form of Rhabdoid cancer and the most aggressive of all cancers. I know my son is with God and is in my heart.
