B. Study (Problems to Be Pursued) and/or Research Interests:

    1. Study (Problems to Be Pursued):

Computer Applications to Education is of particular interest to me. During my period of study, I would like to pursue the study of how computers work and the ways in which they may be useful to educators and learners both in classrooms and in distance education. Study in this field may involve examining a combination of the following components: instruction design; computer applications and programming; management and evaluation.

2. Research Interests:

a. Second Language Education:

I am interested in such areas of studies as outlined in the CTL section of the Bulletin, page 72: curriculum and instruction in second and/or foreign languages, particularly in reference to English and Chinese, including studies of language learning, methodology and organization of classroom instruction, and student and program evaluation, as well as issues related to bilingualism, cultural diversity, and literacy. My primary purpose in pursuing advanced studies is to get a Ph.D. degree related to TEFL and "learn the ropes" in that field, because methodologies in TEFL taught in Taiwan are apparently insufficient for me. I take it for granted that a practising English teacher like me should be filled in on what's practically and theoretically important in the field of TEFL. With these motives in mind, I became very curious about the latest teaching methods, especially those used to boost the interest of students, who speak English as their second language

b. Computer Applications:

I wish to acquire knowledge and skills in computer applications, with emphasis on applying these to education. I believe that teachers using CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication) activities in TEFL can make students' learning more effective and efficient as exemplified by the ACTIONS (A: Access, C: Cost, T: Teaching and Learning, I: Interactivity and User-friendliness, O: Organization, N: Novelty, S: Speed) model as proposed by A.W. (Tony) Bates in 1995 or at the very least can make students' learning environment more individualized that is tailored to each learner's ability level by means of TEFL culture combined with CMC technology.
