Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland confirmed its status as Florida's top school in mathematics competitions by winning the sweepstakes award at the 1999 Mu Alpha Theta state convention. The school, which is located in Broward County, has finished first at five of the last six state conventions.
Vero Beach High School finished second at this year's convention. It also came in second last year.
J. P. Taravella High School -- which won last year's convention -- finished third this year.
Vero Beach finished first in both the Calculus and Alpha divisions. Stoneman Douglas finished first in the Theta division.
The top individuals in each division were:
- Calculus - Ben Richardson of Vero Beach, Kutta Srinivasan of Oviedo
- Alpha - Adam Siegel of H. B. Plant, Darrin Gershman of Stoneman Douglas, Brittany Dees of Vero Beach, David Beasley of Vero Beach
- Theta - Jeremy Miller of Stoneman Douglas
Cypress Lake won first place in the Poster competition. Palm Harbor University finished first in the Computer competition. J. P. Taravella finished first in Scrapbook. Stoneman Douglas was first in Relay.
The date of year's convention was reluctantly changed to April 9-10 at the request of Grenelefe. Although the weekend fell during spring break for some school districts, the number of persons attending -- 1131 students plus 171 sponsors -- was actually greater than last year, although not a record. The number of schools attending -- 70 -- was the largest ever.
