Stoneman Douglas High School won the Fort Myers Invitational held on March 14 (Pi Day) at Fort Myers High School.Vero Beach finished second; Community School finished third; J. P. Taravella was fourth; and H. B. Plant finished fifth.
Note: The sponsoring school reports that two Precalculus Scan-trons from Vero Beach were inadvertently not scored originally. Correcting this error has moved Vero Beach into second place in Precalculus and overall.
J. P. Taravella finished first in Calculus and Precalculus; Stoneman Douglas finished first in Algebra II; and Oviedo High School finished first in Algebra I.
The highest-scoring individuals were Ben L. Richardson of Vero Beach in Calculus, Andrew Curtis of Hillsborough in Precalculus, Darrin Gershman of Stoneman Douglas in Algebra II, Charles Pease of Cape Coral in Geometry, and Kevin Chan of Oviedo in Algebra I.
In the two competitions for non-team members, Paul Pollack of Gulf finished first in the Alpha Open and Phil Welsh of Community School finished first in the Theta Open.
There were some atypical statistics. On the Calculus individual test, eight answers had to be changed to "none of the above." The highest score on the Geometry individual test was 71. And on the Alpha Open test, five answers had to be changed and the highest score was 83.
