REST (check)
Saturday 6-19-04
Ran 7 miles. Started at 7:10 AM. Still too damn hot that
early. I'll have to set up water stops every 3-4 miles during
future runs.

after the thunderstorms which made things nice and muggy.

as a campus and back

REST
Tuesday 6-29-04
I did this three mile run pretty quick after getting out of work at
5:15. Headed out to dinner to hear some live bluegrass music at Good
Ol' Boys immediately after. Then at midnight went to see the
Spiderman 2.
Wednesday 6-30-04
Four miles at 89°F. When I started the run it seemed real
nice out. There was great cloud cover, but no imminent threat of
rain. Of course before I finished the first mile, the sun shined
for the first time that day.
Thursday 7-01-04
Skipped
Friday 7-02-04
REST
Saturday 7-03-04

which turns at the football stadium.
Sunday 7-04-04
Flittered around in a pool for the fourth
Week 14
Monday 7-05-04

It is time for me to start looking for new shoes. The current

ran an easy medium loop with a little chopped off, let's call it 4 miles
Wednesday 7-07-04
Ran five miles with relative ease at Kiesel Park on the outskirts of
Auburn. Finished off the run with a quick final mile.

Ran 3.5 miles at a leisurely pace. Tom...happy birthday, but my
way of updating a website is a hell of a lot easier to read.
Friday 7-09-04
REST
Saturday 7-10-04
Did the ten miles by doing two 5 mile loops around the campus.
Stopped half way for water and a new shirt. The run went pretty
well, so I think I am on the right track.

Did a quick 2.25 miles then played about 45 min
of volleyball

Carnegie, PA. It is a couple of miles from downtown
Pittsburgh. Ran into some real heavy rain in West Virginia.

Went to the University of Pittsburgh to perform experiments on their
equipment.

Went to Schenley Park and ran 13 miles. This is located next to
Carnegie Mellon University and across the bridge from Pitt. Tons
of hills, but a nice running surface. Rained the whole time while
I was running, but the temperature was wonderful.
Sunday 8-01-04
Rest
Week 10
Monday 8-02-04
First day of the Supercritical
Fluid Chromatography, Extraction & Processing Symposium.
In the morning, Dr.
Eric Beckman received an award and gave a
lecture. Then I went to the "Overview of Advances in Critical
Fluid Technology" session. In the afternoon I listened to Dr.
Philip Jessop give a talk on homogenous catalysts. After
which I
switched to the "Fundamentals and optimization in the application of
critical fluids" session.
Tuesday 8-03-04
Before the conference I ran three miles in Carnegie. In the
morning I went to the "Particle formation" session. Some very
interesting talks there. They were very related to my work.
In the afternoon, I went to the "Polymer and material science"
session. Then I presented my poster titled:"High-Resolution
Visualization of Supercritical Antisolvent (SAS) Precipitation
Processes". It seemed to go over pretty well, so I guess the last
couple of months paid off. I may post it on the web for all to
look at.
Wednesday 8-04-04
Ran three miles in the morning. The first session I attended was
"Analytical SFE and Pressurized Fluid Extraction - I". These
talks are not really related to my work, but they were a lot more
interesting than I thought they would be. In the afternoon I
attended "Commercialization of Critical Fluid Technology - II".
Again not related but interesting.
Thursday 8-05-04
Drove from Pittsburgh, PA to Auburn, AL. Ran into traffic outside
of Greenville, SC due to an accident. Also delayed because dinner
was slow due to a bus of people in front of us at the restaurant
Friday 8-06-04
Run 3 miles in the evening.
Saturday 8-07-04
Ran two loops around the campus. There were a ton of people up at
6:30.
Sunday 8-08-04
Ran about 5 miles in Tuskegee
National Forest. They have added two trails since I have been
there last (over a year ago). I ran on the Pleasant Hill
Trail. The Bartram Trail, which up until recently was the only
marked trail, was in very bad shape the last time I ran on it. It
looks like they started the Pleasant Hill trail to allow time to do
maintanence work. The new trail splits off the Bartram Trail at
US 80 and goes for four miles. The footing is much better (very
few tree roots), and it looks a lot dryer than the old trail. The
Bartram Trail often became unpassable due to long stretches of standing
water and dangerous due to tree roots, so this is a huge
improvement. The Bold
Destiny/Bedford V. Cash Memorial Trail is
supposed to be a 14 mile loop in the northern end of the forest.
Week 9
Monday 8-09-04
Rest, under a month until football season. Here
is the schedule for Auburn.
Tuesday 8-10-04
Cut out of work at 3pm and ran four miles after the rain stopped.
(one mile more than scheduled, but the temp was awesome with great
cloud cover) It rained so much that the main computer building
flooded, so the general university intranet was shut down.
Engineering has its own systems, so we just lost e-mail here. Got
to love those tropical storms coming in from the gulf.
Wednesday 8-11-04
Didn't feel like running so the workouts are being pushed back a day.
Dad would be quick to change Tom's suggestion to "Ramblings of an Old Man", but I will leave the
current title until he changes it.
Thursday 8-12-04
4.5 miles, felt bad so I am throughing out the 7
for this week and
resting for Saturday
Friday 8-13-04
Rest
Check out the new Ramblings...
section
Saturday 8-14-04
Ran 7 miles then I felt a really bad pain in my leg. Think I
pulled something. I am going to take a couple of days off.
Sunday 8-15-04
Rest. Also Dad wanted his title to be Ramblings
of Cranky,
Unemployed, Ol' Man so don't yell at me.
Week 8

Deena Kastor.
Week 7
Monday 8-23-04
Time to play catch up a little bit. Ran five miles today
Tuesday 8-24-04
Five miles again.
Wednesday 8-25-04
Took off because I was running around at work too much and needed a rest
Thursday 8-26-04
5 miles to get back in the groove. Also I have been wearing my
new shoes this week. Nike Air Pegasus 2004. A little softer
than the previous shoes, but they will do for the next seven weeks.
Friday 8-27-04
5 miles again and a nice bowl of pasta for dinner. My leg feels
good, but tomorrow is the real challenge
Saturday 8-28-04
Chalk up a 17 miler, even though this week was scheduled as 12. I think
I had enough rest last week. Feel quick tired afterwards, but
I'll survive. Ran the first 5 miles at an easy pace. The
second five were at 7 mile pace to prove to myself that I could do
it. The last seven were relatively easy to take a little stress
of my leg.
Sunday 8-29-04
Really sore today. Got up and started using the
heating pad while I was watching the Olympic Marathon. Impressive
run by the Meb Keflezighi. Too bad it was tarnished by the crazy guy
tackling the leader. Still, the future of US distance running
looks bright. Happily, I feel better in the afternoon.

Jumpin on a plane to Chicago. Damn it looks cold up there.
Great places to see me and the bro' include IIT, downtown, Roosevelt
and Michigan, and Jackson and State. Also the south turn around
has changed from the last Obrzut bout of insanity. The race used
to go to 39th st; now the race turns at 35th st. Just something
to keep in mind. Tom has the numbers right. He has 969. I
have 925. Guess we registered a little early.
Here is the course map
