Showbiz CV: Rupert hadn't done any professional acting before he won the role of Ron Weasley in the Potter films. But he had his fair share of school plays under his belt including playing gangster Rooster in Annie, Peter Pan and Rumplestiltskin in the Grimm Tales.
Rupert spotted his chance to audition for Harry Potter after the casting director made an appeal on Newsround. For the audition, Rupert made a video tape of himself performing a rap he had written explaining why he was perfect for the role of Ron Weasley.
Potty about: Jim Carrey movies. Rupert loves all his movies, especially Ace Ventura, The Mask and The Grinch. Rupert also loves chemistry lessons at school. "You get to make potions and stuff. It came in handy in the movie," he says.
'Rupert's favourite scene in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was the invisibility cloak. He also loved the chess scene - "it's bloody brilliant!" he says.
If he really had magic powers he would... want 'to levitate' says Rupert.
Rupert about acting: I always wanted to be an actor, and went
to an after-school drama class for two years. Before the first Harry
Potter Movie I only acted in school plays. Once I played a fish in Noah's
Ark. I was a heck of a fish. The most recent one was Rumpelstiltskin. It
was fun playing the bad-guy Rumple.
I really wanted the Ron part in the Harry Potter movie, so I signed up for
the part right away I spotted an announcement for Potter auditions on a
kids' TV show in May 2001. I heart nothing about it for months. Then I
read about the auditions on the BBC News round website. I redoubled my
efforts. I made a videotape (my mum filmed it), on which I was playing my
drama-teacher (which is a woman, so it was kind-a freaky). I wrote a rap
song explaining how much I wanted the part. The tape was a bit dodgy
(rough), but it worked. I couldn't believe it when I was called for the
audition. Inside me was the quiet confidence; I am Ron, I am Ron. When I
found out that I got the part, I was so excited, I nearly fainted. It is
cool to be recognized, I like it. When I see comments like "Rupert,
you're the best" or "Rupert, we really fancy you" on the
internet, it's weird, but it's cool as well!. All my brothers and sisters
and friends have really helped me. They make my life normal. I still have
arguments with my brother. And the little ones don't really understand.
They just treat me like Rupert. Which is brilliant, really.
Rupert about Ron Weasley: Ron was always my favorite
character, because I feel like I relate to him. We've both got red hair,
both like sweets, we've both got lots of brothers ands sisters and both
scared of spiders. Ron is really funny. I also feel kind of sorry for him,
because he's always got on hand-me-downs. And he's got a fat, lazy rat.
When I read the books, I imagined that the family of Ron Weasley was my
family. After reading the books, I knew the Weasleys inside out.
Rupert about the Harry Potter books: I am the biggest Harry Potter
fan, I even was before I knew there was going to be a film. I read all the
books. The fourth one is amazing. It's scary. But I like all the books.
You've got to read them all to get the complete Harry Potter experience.
In the third book I like all the bits about scabbers being an Animagus.
And I like that Ron gets an owl.
Trivia: Rupert sometimes posts on the CBBC Newsround Harry Potter
board. He uses the name Permlessboy.
