Taxes & the Budget
We do not need a $2.4 Trillion Federal Government.
The income tax provides the federal government with approximately 52%of its revenue stream. So, if we eliminated the abominable income tax, and simultaneously cut that amount from the federal budget, we would have a  federal government 48% of the size of the one we have now.

Dans'  Positions on the Issues
I believe that a government 48% of the size of this one would be more than adequate. We can defend the United States of America with a defense  budget a fraction of the size of the one we have now - over $400 Billion  - by simply not letting Democrat and Republican politicians continue to build a worldwide empire. They have shown that they cannot be trusted with that much power every time we've trusted them with it.

We can also end all corporate welfare, all business subsidies, pork,  and the failed War on Drugs. Any program for which there is no specific authorization in the Constitution is one which the federal government  should not have; those things should be left to the states, or to people like us working in our own communities. We need a limited, focused        government, not a sugar daddy to everyone. The proper function of  government is to maintain the peace, provide a court system which is  available to all and which can enforce its rulings, and not a heck of a lot else. We Americans in our own homes, families, communities, and states  can then find solutions to our own problems without 'one size fits all'        edicts from Washington.
Oregon taxpayers send $21.5 Billion annually to Washington, D.C. We get back less than $18.3 Billion. What could we do in our State, our Communities, our neighborhoods, and our families with the $3.2 Billion we throw away?
How much do you spend on the income tax? Republicans have lately grown fond of saying that it's better for you to keep your money than to send it  to Washington. If they believed that, they'd actually shrink the size of  the budget. There's no reason that they can't do it. The Constitution is clear, plain, and unambiguous: all bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives (You can find this in the U.S.        Constitution, Article 1 Section 7). The Republicans have controlled the  house for ten years, and federal spending has increased in each and every one of those years, even - especially! - under a Republican President.
I would work to repeal the income tax. I would insist on cutting taxes  and spending way beyond anything the Republicans or Democrats have proposed. I would be mindful that the transition from a behemoth nanny state to a limited government is one we have to take on carefully; while Republican and Democratic politicians tend to threaten the most vulnerable among us in order to keep up their irresponsible levels of spending, I would start by cutting the pork, corporate welfare, and other wasteful spending, making sure that enough money reached our communities and families so that we can take care of the people locally before getting the federal government out of that business.
As a Libertarian in a closely divided Senate, I would have some  influence (it's not unlikely that a single Libertarian in the Senate would  get to cast the deciding vote for majority leader). I would use that  influence to shrink the size of government, and to cut taxes as far as I can, with a goal of ending the income tax and unleashing the American people. A happy consequence would be to free you from the IRS and the        convoluted, stupid, anti-productive tax code. There is no place in a free  nation for an IRS which monitors your economic life as closely as this one does.
