Air: As a national flag carrier of Thailand, Thai Airways International Public Company Limited operates to over 70 destination in 37 countries with a fleet of 73 aircraft and over 20,000 employees around the world. In May 1997, THAI joined four other airlines - United Airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa, and SAS - forming "STAR ALLIANCE", an integrated worldwide air transport network which provides customers with global recognition and a wide range of other benefits. The five Star Alliance airlines together created "The airline network for Earth", with more than 210,000 employees and flights to 578 cities in 106 countries. In October 1997, Varig Brazilian Airlines became the sixth member of the Alliance. The Star Alliance "brand" complements each airline´s individuality and product offerings in their home markets and around the world. The alliance makes global travel more convenient for THAI´s customers by linking airline networks and schedules, offering additional frequent flyer milage point benefits, as well as more airport lounge facilities worldwide, continuing the THAI tradition in Bringing Thailand to the world and the world to Thailand. Domestically, Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) provides services between Bangkok and 21 provincial cities including Hat Yai, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai International Airports. Bangkok Airways, the second domestic airline also flies to such destinations as Chiang Mai, Phuket, Samui and Ranong. Rail: The State Railways of Thailand links with the Malaysian network to carry passengers on to Butterworth, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The privately operated luxury Eastern & Oriental Express train leaves Bangkok for Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Domestically, there are rail links between Bangkok and every region of the country. First and second class carriages with ordinary and air-conditioned sleeping accommodation are available, as are second and third class seats. Road: State and privately owned air-conditioned and ordinary coaches serve every province. Car rental services are available in major cities. Water: Ferries operate between the mainland and offshore islands. Water taxis ply on rivers and canals.
