| Softball Diaries QUOTES of the WEEKEND: "Wilke, I think he got the rule book out...remember he told you that if he does that he has gone overboard!) -- Melly "Sorry 'bout that, we're from Kentucky." -- Dave, after cutting someone off in the Kentucky mini-van. "Whose do you think went further: the one Maves gave up or the one Mal gave up?" -- Tim, when getting to the mound after the Rage HR. "Hey Blue, is that two balls?" -- Tim, after the cutoff incident (is Duff STILL laughing?). "Hey Wilke, remember who's over there." -- Melly to Jess after her second attempt at picking a runner off 1B w/ Mal playing 1B. "Watch this team beat us." -- Duff, after the Rage coach does his standup comedy...they beat us! "I pitched bad." -- Gumness |
| Angie Maves - Pitcher Elmwood, WI Ang is a senior pitcher and has been playing with the Danes since fall of her freshman year. She spent her first summer with the team last year. "The trip started off with an early wake-up on Friday morning and a rush to the MPLS airport. All was well on the trip to Atlanta...although I'm positive many people were annoyed with Hoyt and myself! So anyhoo, we arrive in Atlanta and wait for our connecting flight to Ft. Lauderdale. The Delta flight was way better than the previous Northwest flight, until we began our bumpy landing! We entered the airport and saw some dude holding a sign for a "Pitching Staff." Yeah, that was Tim alright! We come to find out Gumness lost her luggage...great. Tim and Gumness go take care of that stuff while Mal and I wait for Hoyt and Dave to bring up the sweet ride we had. Yep! No other than a Kentucky mini-van! It took us all weekend to figure out those stupid doors! We get to the hotel, meet our teammates, and get ready for a night on the town. The night on the town consisted of going to a cool mall across from the ocean. Because of the brewing hurricane the waves were rather large. After playin in the ocean, Tim made phone calls to everyone he knew and we went to this huge hotel. We rode up the elevator to 19 and went out on the balcony to view an amazing sight. And yes, Tim again called everyone he knew! All of this excitement got us a little hungry so we went and ate at some beach restaurant/bar that served cajun food. The best part about the bar was the BEADS!!! After the team meeting at the hotel we all turned in for the night. Who knew that we should have stayed in bed all day!! The softball games didn't go very well on Saturday due to problems in the pitching staff, and offensive strikeouts were also common! Luckily I got to go back to the hotel the third game and rest up for the Sunday morning game. I do wish, however, that I would have seen Gumness hit the umpire in the nuts! LOL! Sunday went a little better than Saturday. We kept our Nation's pride by beating the Canadians, and then proceeded to lose to a very good - not to mention MANLY - team by only 2 runs. Mallory pitched a good game! That night we went shopping and I'm pretty sure Penza bought out the whole mall! Tim spotted his future wife in a pink dress! While watching the World Series we ordered food....GO D'BACKS!!! "Shut your hole Wang Chung," was the line of the night! Does anyone know how those signs got into Tim's room? lol After the game everyone went to bed. The flight home was long and boring. A nice man helped us jump Dave's car and we headed home. It was a great trip and helped us realize what to strive for to get better in softball. A truly great experience!" Danielle Melchert - SS/2B Seymour, WI Melly is a senior infielder at SHS and has been playing with the Danes for two years. She is starting her second year as a captain of the 18U team. "Our great adventures in Florida began in sunshine and great weather, and ended our last game with Hurrican Michelle! Despite the rain, we managed to have a great time on and off the field. On the field Nikki Gumness had the "play of the weekend." She cut off a home playte throw while she was pitching and when she turned and fired it to the plate she nailed the umpire right in the junk! The entire infield gathered at the mound and started to cry because we were laughing so hard! I feel all in all that our team played and learned well together this weekend. Off the field it was a different story. What would we do without Wilke?! When I walked into Tim's room to watch the World Series, I couldn't believe how many signs she had hanging up. Although she must have got her wires crossed cuz she was rooting for the wrong team! We reminised the entire time we were there. Old players welcomed new players and new players brought a lot to our team. Overall we had a great weekend, minus the "baby powder." THANKS A LOT MAL!!! This was a HUGE event for us and we need to get that out there if you ask me." |
