Games to Play with your Dog

§         Hide ‘N Seek

This game is a terrific way to get the puppy to pay attention to you and respond, as well as learn its name and begin to understand certain commands.  Play Hid ‘N Seek with your pup as you would with a child, hiding objects or having a family member or friend hide.  As the puppy gains confidence and skill at seeking, make the game more challenging by hiding farther distances away and in less visible locations.  Don’t forget to give puppy lots of love, pats and even treats when it finds you.

§         Retrieving

Another classic, this game is especially good at helping expend a puppy’s seemingly endless energy.  Be careful not to introduce this game to your puppy at too young of an age because the physical rigors of twisting and jumping can cause injury.  Thompson also cautions owners to end the game before the puppy wants to.  This way you’re strengthening the puppy’s desire to retrieve.
