Nearly all online mentions of De Bontekoe provide the literal translation of Spotted Cow. Here, likely for the first time, you will learn that De Bontekoe was named after Willem Ysbrants Bontekoe who travelled from Holland to the East Indies 1618-25. The book he wrote of his adventures was the most popular adventure book of seventeenth century Holland. It was reprinted every two years for over a century.
The oldest multinational corporation in history was the VOC (United Company for the East Indies), a trading company that existed from 1602 to 1799. In 1618, the VOC sent the ship Nieuw-Hoorn, with Willem IJsbrandz (IJ is the Dutch way to write Y) Bontekoe as captain, on a voyage to Batavia (Jakarta) on the island of Java to trade silver for spices, tea, and coffee. Near the end of the voyage the ship explodedthe brandy caught fire and lit the gunpowder. Captain Bontekoe was saved and led about 70 men, in a small boat with sails made of clothing and almost no food or water, navigating by the stars, safely ashore.

The ship "De Bontekoe," in 1660, was owned by investors in New Amsterdam. One had been an employee of the VOC in Batavia prior to moving to America.
