(the) songs of 2000 three
01 stars and sons - broken social scene - you forgot it in people
i first heard this on a local radio show in april, and fell in love with it instantly.  the album it is from is great, yes, but this song is phenomenal.  it pretty much held the title of best song of the year since i first heard it.  its layered with guitars, drums, percussion, keyboards, loops, programming out the behind, and the vocals are beautiful.  a raspy whisper has never been such a beautiful dull roar.  why this never caught on to be atop the billboard hot 100 is beyond me.
03 fins for our feet - oranges band - all around
talk about a late runner.  just added to the list days before it was put together, this definitely gets the title of catchiest song.  a simple, yet layered guitar track over roman kublers vocals makes for a happy time when driving your car.  the chorus is the by far the best: light strums, finger snaps, hand claps, and high notes harmonizing completely bliss.
02 bought for a song - fountains of wayne - welcome interstate managers
whenever there is a false start, there will always be this song in second.
04 ask yer dad - the tyde - twice
all i have to say is when i discovered this song in the summer, i couldnt get enough of it.  i still cant.  one person who can is my girlfriend.  id just like to thank laura for putting up with me grinning like an idiot and playing this song 20 times a day sometimes.  its so happy, so summery, so good. it now reminds me of her, thanks to the opening line sometimes this life gives you the ball. and it surely did.
05 no lsd tonight - jeffrey lewis - it is the ones who've cracked that the light shines...
this song is just downright funny.  a sequel to the last time i did acid i was insane, it reminds me of many songs arranged just like it, yet i could not name one for you right now at this late hour.
10 gone for good (alternate version) - shins - so says i
whereas the album version is fuller and tangled up in am gold, this version is stripped down even further.  changing the key, altering a few words [floating becomes fucking around in the second chorus,] and going down to just an acoustic guitar and drums. adding in silly back up shouts of orgasmic excitement, this song is definitely placed properly as a b-side to the albums first single.
