On June 29, 1978, Robert Crane was found in an apartment in Scottsdale, Arizona, bludgeoned to death with a tripod. He had been so badly beaten he was hardly recognizable.

John Carpenter was the prime suspect in the murder.

After years of building a case, the Arizona State Attorney charged John Carpenter with first-degree murder. He was acquitted for lack of evidence.

The Crane case remains unsolved.
