COYOTE AND DOVE

This story is said to have a Navajo origin.

One evening Dove was flying home. She was a little later than usual and it was just a little darker than usual, so she could not see the ground very well. As she landed she hit a large rock and hurt herself. She started moaning.

Just about this time Coyote came by. He heard Dove and thought 'what a beautiful song'. So Coyote went over to Dove and said

"Dove such a beautiful song. Please teach me that song"

Dove tried to explain that it was not a song that she was singing, but that she was hurt. Coyote just looked at her and said "Dove teach me that song". So Dove tried.

Soon Coyote thanked dove and went on home. When he got home he called to all his relatives and said "I have a beautiful song and I want to sing it for you". So Coyote laid his head back and all that came out was

a Hooooowwwwllllllll.

They all laughed at him and went away.

Coyote was upset and went back to Dove. "Dove teach me that song" said Coyote. Dove knowing Coyote wouldn't give up tried again to teach Coyote the song. Once again Coyote thanked her and went home. Again he gathered everyone and round so he could sing this new song. Well once again HOOOOWWWWWLLLLL was all that came out.

He was embarrassed.

Meanwhile; Dove was feeling better and as she looked at the rock she hit she realized it looked like a Dove. So she pushed it over to where she had been sitting and went on home. Well sure enough here came Coyote who said, "Dove teach me that song". There was no answer from Dove.

"DOVE TEACH ME THAT SONG or I will eat you"

Again no answer. "OK Dove I warned you" And Coyote bit what he thought was Dove. "uhh a uhh" "uhh a uhh" Just about this time Raven was flying over and heard Coyote he landed by Coyote and said

"Coyote such a beautiful song. Will you teach it to me?" 1
