In the book, Silas is described as
A hulking male albino assassin with pink eyes and red pupils. He had white hair and "ghost-pale skin". He's a devoted monk in the Opus Dei church. He regularily practices "Corporal Mortification"
required by the church. He often repeats "Pain is good" when he is doing this. He is very trusting and listens primarily to Bishop Manuel Aringarosa and "the Teacher".
In the movie, Silas's character is almost the same, except slightly smaller in build than described in the book and he has blue eyes instead. (Which I think is a bit more realistic
considering he is an albino.)
Some unrealistic things are that albinos are normally short-sighted and have very bad eye-sight. Although, in The Davinci Code, Silas can make a perfect shot in the dark!
Kind of strange considering albinos have bad eyesight!
Silas's past: Silas wasn't born with the name Silas. He was born into a family with an abusive drunk as a father. His father blamed his mother for Silas's embarrassing condition and beat
his mother often. When he tried to protect his mother, he got beaten as well. One bad night, his father beat his mother so badly that she didn't get up. Silas then stabbed his father over and over until he died.
He then fled to the streets and stayed there for awhile. Over the past few years he had grown strong. By the time he was 12, a girl tried to steal his food and he had beaten her to near death. He then left
his home town, Marseilles, France and moved to Toulon. When he was 18, he tried to steal a case of cured ham and got caught by 2 sailors. He broke thne first's neck, but the police saved the second and
put Silas in prison. One night there was an earthquake and the prison was shattered, letting Silas escape. He wandered, hungry and delerious, until he reached a train. He crawled inside an empty car for rest
and shelter. When the conductor found him, they threw him out. He wandered a small village in search of food, but ended up collapsing at someone's doorstep. He found himself lying in a soft bed, but
being rather sick, thought he was Jesus standing over him. He then woke up to the sounds of fighting. He ran to a room and saw a large man standing over a smaller man, a priest. He hurled the large man to the back wall
and the large man fled. When he woke up again, he saw a newspaper article telling about the earthquake and the prison. Just when he was think of where to run, the priest, Manuel Aringarosa, handed him The Book of Acts. There
was a story in there telling of a prisoner named Silas laying naked and beaten in his cell, singing hymns to God when "suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken and
all the doors fell open". He found that he was Oviedo, Spain. Since he couldn't remember the name his parents gave him, Manuel Aringarosa gave him the name Silas.
