11:30am, 7/11/99 Voltaire: "I do not believe in a word you say but I shall defend to the death your right to say it." Now I love this line! It's a very cool statement. But I must object to the extremities to which freedom of speech is taken....(more on this another day, I have no energy left to discuss it at the moment)
11:30am, 7/11/99 There are often stories where they tell the stories of animals who think like humans. People say: "Hey! isn't that such a cute children's story?". Question: How does anybody know that dogs and cats don't think just like us? Until we have actually lived the life of a dog or cat, we shall never know how they think; never know if they are colourblind, never be able to judge their intelligence. So, for all those researching biologists out there, GIVE IT UP!
9:00pm, 10/11/99 . Here's a thought of my own: "Idealism refers, not to what cannot be achieved, but what people do not have the courage to try and achieve."
9:20pm, 10/11/99 What is the difference between "gift" and "talent"? Another of my nit-picky definitions. Often the words are interchangeable, but I personally believe: Gift is what someone is born with, a "natural ability"; talent is what is worked for, where one has studied a skill enough to make one's own proficiency outstanding. Talent can be earned; gift cannot. I think with supposedly gifted people (or talented, as many people interchange the terms), more is attributed to gift than should be - a great deal of hard work is included to nurture this gift into an outstanding talent (ie, an outstanding outstanding skill).
10:00pm, 11/11/99 An interesting quote: "Perhaps there can be no perfection. Only levels of imperfection... A piece [of music] is never complete, only at some stage abandoned... We must know when to move on. To search too long for perfection can also paralyse." [Maestro1881, Peter Goldsworthy, 1951- ]
9:30pm, 17/11/99 It doesn't make sense when people complain that you are staring at them - obviously they have to have been staring at you long enough to realise that you were staring at them.
8:00pm, 19/11/99 All actions are in pursuit of satisfaction. If we were satisfied, we would feel no need to do anything. If we were dissatisfied, we would endeavour to make ourselves satisfied... once we are satisfied, we continue whatever we are doing till dissatisfaction becomes too much again. Now I'm just rambling about nothing, so I better end it here for now.
7:00pm, 23/11/99 When one is given a compliment, should you display what is called "humility", and humbly deny to praise? or should one display "gratitude", and accept the compliment? Here is the dilemma - just another nit-picky thing. If you display "humility", and deny the praise, downplay whatever greatness you were alleged to have shown, you could be seen to be proud - you are saying something amazing is nothing at all, inferring that you could do a lot better. However, if you accept the praise in "gratitude", you could also be said to be proud - you are thinking "Gee, I really am wonderful aren't I?"
8:30pm, 9/12/99 Why do we have wonderful fantasy stories about dragons, unicorns etc etc, in the knowledge that these are just fantasies... and we spend so much money looking for aliens in outer space?
